FLASHPOINT BLAZ 300 / GODOX MS300 AC Strobes Announced



Flashpoint and Godox have announced the new Flashpoint BLAZ 200 & 300 / Godox MS200 & MS300 AC powered compact studio flashes.

The new entry level 200Ws and 300Ws monolights featuring a more compact body design, and extra stop of power range (now down to 1/32) than the earlier Studio / SK II series lights.

With 2.4GHz radio receiver built inside, the new AC strobes will combine nicely with the full range of Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System enabled lights and transmitter units.

For a long time inexpensive studio flashes have been something of a risky proposition, now you can purchase some very decent flashes in performance and reliability starting from under $100.

Although very budget friendly, the BLAZ / MS200 & 300 still provide stable power output between shots (within 2% variation).

And if the Studio / SK II are anything to go by, color consistency across the power range (5600 +/- 200k), and flash durations (1/2000s – 1/800s) should be very respectable for these inexpensive voltage controlled strobes as well.

Power range is now 5 stops, 1/1 – 1/32 (with fine 0.1 stop graduations), and full power recycle time is 1.3 seconds for the 220V version, and 1.8s for the 110V strobes.

The 150W halogen modelling light is adjustable from 5% to 100%, as well as Proportional (to follow the flash power setting).

    INCREDIBLE bargain. I didn’t think they would have the radios built-in for that price. Smart of them to include it.

    We live in a fantastic, photography age. Just a few years ago, something like this would’ve cost $300 – $400 WITHOUT radios. These things are even less expensive than many on camera flashes. If the build quality is anywhere near their bigger brothers…. Wow!

    What is the difference to Gemini model? The same specs, similar price… mI missing something?

      I’m hoping it has a fan. I’ve read complaints that the GS is prone to overheating.

      It has a better mount (looks like the AD600Pro mount).

      I wonder if it’s got a dual voltage power supply? The GS specifies two different fuses for 100v and 22V whereas the MS only specifies one.

      GS quoted recycle time is slightly quicker.

    I am curious, what is the surge current draw after a full power flash?
    I ask, because I have several of the 300w older GS300 units and if I fire 4 of them on a 15amp breaker, it blows the breaker if I shoot at a moderate speed. If I fire 5, forget it, pop goes the breaker.

    In my studio, for my head shot area, i have 3 of the GS300 dedicated but I have to shoot those at iso400 and keep power down.

    Curious if these are more efficient or have reduce surge draw?

      Hi David,

      Yes, you can take a photo at 1/100th, or any slower shutter speed.

      You actually want a flash duration that is shorter than the time the camera shutter is open, so that all of the light from the flash can reach the camera image sensor while the shutter is open.

      Where many IGBT flashes and speedlites often have issues is when the flash duration is actually too long at full power. For speedlites that’s often around 1/200s. So when you try to use a shutter speed of 1/250th, the flash doesn’t have time to get all its light out in that period, and you end up with less than the flash full light output in the image.

    I see these have the remote receivers built-in, but at this price is this trigger-only or is there manual remote power? Also, with the modeling light, is it’s strength at all relative to the power dialed-in for the flash? Or if I have 2 of these flashes, one at 1/2 and one at 1/4, do I have to manually set one modeling light at 100% and the next at 50% to represent how the actual lighting will look? And does the modeling light power-down when the flash is tripped, or is it such a minuscule amount of light that it doesn’t affect the final image?

      The modeling light is an incandescent bulb. there’s no point in powering it down just before the flash fires because a) it’s very dim compared to the power of the flash and b) incandescent bulbs emit light for a long time after the power is removed (relative to the duration of the flash)

      Hi Dave,

      The modelling light has a Proportional setting, as well as manual power level control. When set to Proportional the modelling light automatically adjusts in accordance with the flash power level set.

      Some of the Godox studio lights have an option to have the modelling light go off when the flash goes, though I don’t think these provide that option. The modelling light doesn’t usually affect the image, I think most people use that option just as an indication the flash has recycled.

      If you were doing a long exposure (or high ISO etc) where ambient light would affect the image, then just turn the modelling light of before shooting.

    Looks like the end of Alien Bees. These are better built, more fully featured and offered at an insane price point.
    Buy from Adorama and you have support.
    Moreover you can buy an extra if you are really worried about reliability. OTOH if you have any Godox experience you know they are solid performers.

    Only problem is that there is no power dumping here so you have to remember to pop the flash if you reduce power… other than that …perfect strobes….

    The price is unbeatable…

    I just got my Blaz 300 in. It is a very good light for the money.
    Although I would rather pay closer to $175 if it had a LED modeling lamp and 1/128 or 1/64 power.

    I have not tested the color accuracy, but am hoping it does not change much.

    It is a great compliment to the ad200, ad400 and ad600pro.

    I have a few digibees and yet the modeling light is the really big difference between those and this.

    Has anyone here used it? saw a photoshoot on youtube and while using the modelling lamp with the flash, he got the inevitable orange tint in the photos.

    Just got one of these. Whilst the mount looks like the Ad600Pro/AdD400pro it’s plastic rather than metal, Its lots better than the Ad600/AD-B2/S-type bracket one though.

    Fired 50 full power pops in secession – no sign of overheating.

    It will not take genuine Bowens modifiers (the ones with the silver ring at the base). generic ones are slightly smaller and fit OK. Will see if I can adjust it to take the Bowens modifiers.
