Flashpoint and Godox have released the new EVOLV 200 PRO / AD200 PRO, an upgraded and slightly revised version of the very popular original EVOLV / AD200 Lithium-ion powered TTL / HSS compact cordless flash.

And the EVOLV 200 PRO are available now from Adorama for $349.

The new PRO model primarily adds improved color consistency across the power range, though there are also a number of small physical revisions to the flash body and interface as well.

The 200 PRO provides an updated interface, with a slightly recessed display panel, which may help with being less prone to breakage than the original model.

Two extra buttons have also been added for faster access to functions.




The USB port for Firmware updates has been upgraded to USB-C.

And the flashes threaded mounting points now include 2 recessed slots, corresponding with a new all metal umbrella swivel light stand mount which will no longer twist around when attached to the flash.

    If I was buying a new one I’d buy one of these but there’s nothing compelling enough to make me want to replace any of my existing AD200s with one of these.

    If the recycle time was ~1 second I might be tempted but then I suppose that would require a higher voltage battery.

      Personally I don’t care much for the color temperature improvements. I could never tell the difference between 5600K and 5700K even if I tried really hard. But I’m sure there are people who care for that. To me, the only desireable update here is 1/256 minimum power, compared to 1/128 on the original AD200. But then again, if I need that little light, then that’s what the traditional speedlites are for. Hopefully this Pro model will cause lots of used AD200’s to pop up on ebay at very nice prices 🙂

        I’m pretty sure the grand majority of people interested in the 200 pro are thinking similarly; they’re not going to swap out their existing system for a relatively minor improvement. More likely these would be bought to either augment their existing lineup, or much more likely, for people interested in switching over from a different brand or moving into this brand from scratch. It’s only $50 more than the base 200, so I assume most would opt for the ‘pro’ version if buying freshly into the system.

      UPDATE – The recycle time has improved considerably to 0.9 seconds at full power, inline with the 400, and 600 PRO!

      Now stated as 1.8 seconds at full power.

          UPDATE on the UPDATE – Unfortunately the recycle time Godox stated was incorrect, they are now stating 1.8 seconds at full power.

          So quite possibly very little practical difference to the original model if any unfortunately.

      You’re not kidding. I’ve been trying to update my firmware via a Windows VM on my Mac, and it’s thus far been impossible. It can’t be THAT hard to write a Mac installer.

    The Adorama page says the fresnel head has a 20W LED modeling light. If true, this would be a substantial improvement over the 3.6w in the original. Can anyone verify this?

      Hi Paul,

      I think that would be highly unlikely, as a 20W LED for one thing would drain the battery pretty quick.

      The optional AD-L LED head is 3.6W, so the built-in LED in the Fresnel head is likely 2W (not 20W).

    Kudos to Godox for continually offering improvements to their products. The two specific features I find good in their new version is the ability to go down to 1/256 and the indents to prevent the unit from swiveling when mounted to the 1/4 20 socket. I use an ND filter gel when I want to go lower, but having it built in is convenient.

    Agreed. Kudos to Godox for improving their systems. Is the new system worth the $50 premium over the older versions? Yes. Barely. Though I think a MKII would’ve been more appropriate for the feature updates/upgrades in the unit. But justifying the price hike wouldn’t been a tougher sell too… I still think it’s a fantastic unit at this price.

    I like all the little improvements with power-range, USB-C and color consistency. In that order. But the best for me is the recycle-speed upgrade. Excellent for event photography and will be a great help for wedding photographers.

    These improvements are more than surface cosmetics.
    Godox/Flashpoint paid attention to our concerns and criticisms concerning structure and performance, to bring us obvious and not so obvious advantages over the very fine AD200/eVOLV200.
    I look forward to using them for location assignments with even fewer problems than the great eVOLV200.

    My thinking also same .Is that Color consistency mode related to Flash Tube/Bare bulb ? If its depend body(unit) shall we use older Flash Head/bare bulbs?

    Theoreticaly one could achive better colour consistency by lab calibrating (using built in lookup tables) the current/voltage curve fed to the heads under the various power settings but I suspect this has been achieved just by better QC of the flash tube bulb, or else it is just a clever marketing rewrap of the old unit.

      On the AD600Pro and AD400Pro they seem to use a method much like this from Broncolor http://www.broncolor.us/2010/01/broncolor-scoro-enhanced-color-temperature-control-ectc/
      On IGBT devices like the Godox strobes they drop the initial voltage so that the right mix of colours and intensities under the discharge curve add up to the right colour temperature at the end. This is why you have to manually dump current when reducing the power of the strobe in this mode.

      I would have expected the AD200Pro to work the same way.

    I would’ve have appreciated the “temperature warning” not being that ridiculously protective, as soon as you turn on the hss 1/320 it gives you very little pops before it turns on, so run to the unit, quick take the battery out and then in solves it, but still..!!

    I have encountered a strange anomaly with my Evolv 200 and R2 trigger when used on my new Canon EOS R.
    I shoot manual exposure only but I noticed that the ISO changed at random when using the trigger.
    I complained on a few fora about this and someone tipped me off to this phenomenon happening to them.

    Has anyone else had a similar issue and if so, has anyone found a solution?
    I have a message into Adorama but have not had a reply.

      I have the same issue using the R2 and AD600 on my EOS R. I shoot manual and my ISO will suddenly jump to auto or 1600 and blow out my image. Can’t find a solution and there is no Flashpoint/Godox firmware for Mac here’s.

      I have that same annoying issue with my Canon Eos R using the Flashpoint R2 T (not the Pro) with the Xplor 600 ttl. It was annoying when I wasn’t using the strobe to shoot a person but I just shot headshots and portrait for a friend and lost lots of shots due to the ISO suddenly jumping to 1600 or auto. I had six blown out shots in a row several times before I would discover the change. This is a major issue. Pressing the Lock settings button on the camera doesn’t do anything to help either.

      Has anyone figured this out? Is there a firmware update to fix it? There is still no firmware update application for Mac. Does the newer R2 Pro trigger work without this problem?

    is it possible to reduce the FEC to 0 in manual mode? ⅓ stop increments, when unnecessary, are a pain when having to constantly change power output. thanks!

    This things have serious issues: two out of three died on me, soon after the guarantee expired.
    Considering the much higher quality, the longer life and twice the power, a Profoto B10 looks cheaper in the long run. Me, I am not touching these things with a bargepole.

      They were released in January 2017 and have a two year guarantee so they must have failed quite recently. How did they fail?

    With a simple reestiling of this head it would be possible.

      The round head has a surprisingly good modeling light. If they had swapped the bare bulb for the round head in the Pro package it would have been lots more attractive.

    Any idea on when they will be coming out with more than just the one grid in the accessory kit? It’s probably around 40-50 degrees, and I really need something tighter to control the spread, like a 20 or 10-degree grid.

    My dream Godox product would be an AD360 in the form factor of the AD200.

    The 400pro is a bit too big for me and my AD360 kit now just seems a fiddle with the cables and battery pack.

      The AD200 is only .3 to .5 stops less powerful than the AD360 (which is not a 360Ws light) .

    Looking at my AD200 guide and I have a question about setting custom functions. the custom function sign F5 says the functioon is Mask. What is Mask?
