FLASHPOINT R2 PRO Mark II Transmitter – New Firmware Adds Channel Scan Function

New Firmware is now available for the Flahspoint R2 PRO II transmitters adding the Channel Scan Function, which allows you to scan for channels with the best radio reception in the current environment.

And the firmware is available now from the Flashpoint Download Page.

The same Channel Scan Function is also implemented in the recent Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X / Godox V1 Speedlites, and R2-T Mark II / X2T Transmitters.

If you’re having any issue with misfires or radio interference its a good idea to use a different channel, and now you can select a cleaner channel, rather than just randomly trying different ones.

Although not related to the current firmware update, the R2 PRO II Transmitter’s Single Group Test Fire Button is also now working with the EVOLV 200 PRO / AD200 PRO and XPLOR 400 PRO / AD 400 PRO strobes.

This Single Group Test Button can be very handy when using a light meter, or even simply checking the light you wanted is in the correct group you’re about to adjust.

Unfortunately enabling this function actually required a hardware change in the flashes, so only new model Godox and Flashpoint strobes will be compatible with the Single Group Test Button.

Hopefully they will get round to addressing misfires, I have this and the standard X-Pro which does not have the misfire issues

Mike were you on firmware V1.1?, as that added the misfire fix the Xpro received earlier. That appeared to resolve most peoples misfire issues I’m aware of.

      • mike weeks 4 months ago

no, on 1.2 got so bad that in the middle of a job I changed to my X-Pro and had no issues

Ok, sorry I was referring to V1.1 in the Canon version. Which appears to be equivalent to V1.2 in Nikon anyway.

I would try the new firmware and channel scan function (once its available for Nikon), though it sounds like you will likely have to look at exchanging the transmitter.

My Nikon R2 Pro Mark II was nearly unusable in v1.1, so many misfires. That pretty much cleared up in v1.2, only two in @150 frames. We’ll see if the v1.4 SCAN function can improve on that.

              Thanks James,

That is generally what I have been hearing from others that had issues earlier as well.

I don’t know what the issue was, or what Godox did to rectify it. It appeared to mainly be affecting Sony and Nikon users though.

Yes I mentioned that at the end of the post. All the other versions are there, so I suspect its just an incorrect link, or they forgot to upload the new Nikon firmware.

I’ve already let Adorama know, so looks like we may have to wait until Monday.

I downloaded the Nikon version v1.4 and it includes the SCAN function. Here’s the text from the v1.4 included update.
      – V1.4
      – Add custom function with allows to scan for a channel with the best reception
      – 7/16/2019

        Thanks James,

Adorama must have updated the link (it was going to V1.2 previously).

Disappointing that unlike Godox who offe a Pentax version of the XPro, Flashpoint doesn’t offer a Pentax version of the Mark II.

It should be a piece of cake to combine the existing firmware versions into the one that is needed for the Pentax version of the Mark II.

      Hi Tim,

I’ll have to check on that. It could possibly be the case that sales of the Pentax version Xpro were too low to justify Flashpoint making the minimum quantity of R2 PRO II required. That’s just a guess though I’ll have to find out.

I have the consistency issues with its modeling lamp Functioning Buttons .Yesterday I updated my R2 Pro2 . I hoped its gonna solve but its not solved. Anyone have same issues ?

      Hi Ganesh,

That sounds more like a hardware issue unfortunately, you may need to look at exchanging the transmitter.

The modelling light control layout is not the ideal though, you do realize you need to double press the modelling light button on the left side of the transmitter to enter or exit the modelling light control screen, or to change the modelling light power setting when in the Single Group display screen?

Have recently had problems with misfires and non-fires. Then I read in the manual that only alkaline AA batteries are recommended. I have been using Eneloop rechargeables. Can this really be the problem? Latest firmware.

      Hi Alan,

Yes most radio transmitters are voltage sensitive and provide a stronger signal with the higher 1.5 volts of alkaline batteries compared with 1.2 volts of NiMH rechargeable.

The one catch is alkaline batteries drop voltage gradually as they deplete, so as they are getting low they will likely be offering less voltage than the NiMH. So you want good Energizer or Duracell batteries that hold their charge as long as possible.

I personally gave up using or testing with any rechargeable batteries in radio triggers years ago after seeing a few differences in range tests etc.

And I only use Energizers now because I have lots of triggers set up and I can leave the Energizers in those without them leaking, where I found the Duracels will leak sooner or later if left in.

    Hi Flash, 🙂

it would be great to be hearing from you about the reasons that stopped Flashpoint going forward with a Pentax version. It was originally listed but subsequently pulled.

I think Flashpoint’s Mark II version is much better designed and it is a shame to not being able to use it.

Flashhavoc: Why doesn’t andorama show version number of the firmware on the web page go?

Can the R2 Pro II be used with lithium batteries? They are lighter and last longer than alkalines and don’t leak.

    • Bill 3 months ago

Edit: The AA Lithiums are 1.5 volts

    • John Wilson 3 months ago

I use Lithiums in all my Godox triggers. They work fine.

Saw your post a couple weeks ago and finally updated my firmware (Canon version) today.
Glad this is available now because I’ve been using my V1 as a channel scanner and this will be much more convenient.

I do wish the scroll wheel on these transmitters was a little smoother, it kinda hangs sometimes. Other than that I love these R2 PRO Mark II transmitters.

I have run some tests after updating the firmware on my unit along with the strobes:

Whew OK so I have conducted a test of all the Flashpoint triggers I own and posted my results to my blog.

Do I need a compatible (modern) flash for this scan feature to work? Or is this feature self-contained to this trigger?

I could see myself replacing an old X1T with this updated version, provided the scan feature would help me find a better channel for my AD200s.

    • Mark Kitaoka 2 months ago

Luke the trigger does channel scanning independent of the strobe.

I cannot for the life of me get the R2 XPro mkii (F)
To trigger my Godox sk400ii’s beyond sync speed on either xt-3 or xh-1 with latest firmware.

The SK400ii and SK300ii’s that I use in studio are a part of the Godox/Flashpoint R2 2.4g ecosystem and work fine with R2 Pro vi when using HSS.

Not the newest version, however. Does anyone have a suggestion? I just updated to firmware 1.3 on the R2XProviiF trigger, but still no HSS.

In fact, in the flash settings on the xt-3 I can’t even get the camera to switch to manual flash mode. It automatically switches to ttl!
