METTLE – LIGHT 400 TTL – Cordless Strobe Coming

Details are emerging of Chinese lighting manufacturer Mettle’s introduction into the TTL and HSS cordless strobe market, with the LIGHT 400 TTL, and later to follow LIGHT 600 TTL strobes.

The LIGHT 400 are 400Ws, Lithium-ion powered, IGBT strobes. With 2.4GHz TTL and HSS enabled radio receiver built-in, initially for Canon and Nikon DSLR camera systems.

The LIGHT 400 TTL’s, 12V, 4400mAh, Lithium-ion battery forms the top section of the strobe, and uniquely includes the strobes built-in handle.

The battery providing 400 full power pops per charge, with 2.8 second full power recycle time.

Weight for the complete unit with battery attached is just 1.8kgs.

The LIGHT 400 TTL also feature a large full color dot matrix TFT LCD display interface.

And provides 6 individual groups A / B / C / D / E / F, 16 channels, and 100 user ID’s.

Triggering and remote power control is via a low profile transmitter unit, initially to be available in Canon and Nikon versions, and providing up to 300 meter range.

Again supporting 6 groups A / B / C / D / E / F, 16 channels, and 100 user ID’s.

The LIGHT 400 feature a Bowens S-type accessory mount, and a 10Watt LED modelling light.

The later 600 LIGHT TTL strobe’s modelling light is expected to provide fully variable, manual, or auto tracking, adjustment.

Though its not clear at this point if the LIGHT 400 TTL’s LED will provide more than a simple ON and OFF function (and Auto OFF after 10 seconds).

METTLE LIGHT 400 TTL

The LIGHT 400 TTL’s transmitter unit provides control of 6 remote flash groups in TTL, Manual or Multi Modes.

And TTL and Manual Groups can be mixed together, or turned OFF individually as required.

Regular readers may recognise the platform Mettle’s transmitter is likely based on.

One significant improvement though is the addition of individual Group buttons now located on the rear interface (where they are much easier to operate than regularly using both side and rear buttons).

The Mettle transmitter is also a transceiver, providing a radio slave mode compatible with respective Canon or Nikon TTL and HSS enabled speedlites. With up to 300 meter range.

This means the one transmitter unit can fire and control the LIGHT 400 TTL strobes, and Canon or Nikon speedlites at the same time, with full TTL, Remote Manual, and HSS etc.

Remote Zoom control for the speedlites is possible through the transmitter, as well as modelling light control for strobes where applicable.

Its not clear yet if the transmitter will provide a full TTL pass though hotshoe, for using a TTL flash on camera.

The transmitter does have an internal metal frame to help support a flash mounted on top though.

Mettle make a point of noting the LIGHT 400 TTL pulse the strobe in HSS mode (like a speedlite does), and are not just using the Long Duration Sync method.

Now referring to this as “Super High Speed Sync”.

Mettle will also produce a manual version of their new battery powered strobes, in the MS-400. (Also to be available in lighter 200Ws and 300Ws versions).

The MS-400 are mainly remote manual strobes only. Though they do still provide a HSS mode which can be manually selected on the strobe.

(And would then need to be fired via a suitable radio trigger set, providing the HSS pre-sync signal).

Interestingly the MS-400 also provide a short flash duration mode for freezing motion, and providing 4 options –

  • F1: 1 / 11000s
  • F2: 1 / 8000s
  • F3: 1 / 4000s
  • F4: 1 / 2000s

A basic remote manual, single firing pin, and single group, transmitter will also be available to use with the MS-400.

And the wave continues. Given Mettle’s longstanding status as a supplier for Adorama house brand lights (perhaps others but the Adorama connection is one I’m sure of), I wonder if these will be picked up as well. Though if it is, and the Jinbei light is as well, that would give Adorama three separate manufacturers supplying similar products (Mettle, Jinbei and Godox).

    Why it look so NICE

Just wonder if we have to send them somewhat alike:

    “Dear METTLE,
Please work hard with Godox folks in regards to incorporate their external XTR recievers connection capabilities into your flash, so we can have a chance to fire and control your flashes not only with your proprietary stuff, but with those who have more flexibility at this moment. If you are not – I’m putting 25$ each motht towards Godox TTL 600W unit…”

    :)
