Adorama have released the first Canon RT, AND Nikon compatible, TTL and HSS enabled 600Ws cordless strobe, in the new ORLIT RoveLight RT 610 TTL!

The RoveLight RT 610 are Adorama’s much anticipated version of Jinbei’s HD 610 Lithium-ion powered TTL strobes. Including all of their features, as well as adding direct compatibility with Canon’s own 2.4GHz RT radio system. All in the one strobe.

Once again the RT 610 should provide a major breakthrough for the many Canon based professional wedding and event photographers wanting to expand their flash system with larger off camera strobes, while retaining the well refined original Canon RT speedlites as their on-camera master unit.

Nikon owners are not left out though, as the Orlit RT 610 still provide the original Jinbei / Orlit 2.4GHz RF radio receiver modes for both Canon and Nikon DSLR systems.

And Adorama will also have there own RT compatible master and slave enabled speedlites in the Orlit RT-600C. As well as a Nikon version Orlit 600N coming.

 

ORLIT RoveLight RT 610

 

As the “RoveLight” branding indicates, the Orlit RoveLight RT 610 are also the follow up to Adorama’s very popular original Lithium-ion powered fully cordless Flashpoint RoveLight 600B.

(Due to their significantly upgraded radio system, there is relatively limited backward compatibility between the 2 lights though. More on that further below).

The Orlit RT 610’s 14.8V 6000mAh Lithium-ion battery provides around 450 full power pops per charge, with 2.3 second full power recycle time.

Manual power control is from full power down to 1/256th, and adjustable in full or 0.1 stop increments.

The large full color LCD interface displays the power levels as 0.1 – 0.9. And simply pressing the main dial allow fast full stop adjustments.

Up to 6 Groups are provided, A / B / C / D / E / F. Though this will depend on the transmitter units used.

The interface also provides a fast and simple menu system.

The Orlit RT 610 provide an S-type accessory mount, and a fan cooled 20 watt LED modeling lamp (equivalent to 100 watt halogen), with warm 3200K color temperature to help match halogen bulbs.

The Modeling light provides manual control in fine 0.1 increments across a 9 stop range, or proportional control adjusting automatically to match the strobes manual power level.

Remote control from the Orlit transmitter unit is limited to turning the modelling light ON and OFF (via individual group though, and using Manual or Proportional modes).

Compatible transmitter units for the Orlit RT 610 when used in RT radio mode include all of Canon’s own RT enabled master units, like the 600EX-RT II flash, and ST-E3-RT transmitter.

Though Orlit also offer their own transceivers for Canon and Nikon, in the TR-611C, and TR-612N.

The Canon version TR-611C providing both Canon RT, and Orlit / Jinbei 2.4GHz RF Canon radio modes.

ORLIT TR-611C

 

The Orlit TR-611C, and TR-612N both provide 3 flash groups A / B / C, and allow TTL and Remote Manual Groups to be mixed together, and turned off individually as needed.

Remote zoom control for speedlites is also available by group.

The hotshoe on top of the units when used as transmitter mounted on the camera provide full TTL pass through for a flash mounted on top.

Radio range is specified as up to an impressive 300 meters.

(Note – Remote Modelling light control is only available in the RF modes, not RT Mode).

 

ORLIT TR-611C

 

The Orlit TR-611C, and TR-612N transceivers can also act as receiver units.

And these can also be used to simply fire other strobes in combination with the Orlit lights, or even fire and control compatible TTL speedlites.

 

 

 

For current owners of the original FlashPoint Rovelight the Orlit RT 610 do provide a legacy TRS radio transmission mode compatible with the RoveLight TRS transmitter.

Though selecting the TRS mode does not then allow any group control ability (basically reducing the Orlit RT 610’s functionality to that of the original RoveLights)

So the legacy TRS mode is quite limited, and its likely original RoveLight owners will find more useful work arounds which do not lose group control with the Orlit RT 610.

These would mainly involve firing the original RoveLights via an external receiver unit, attached to the flash via PC sync cord. And using the original TRS transmitter just to control the original RoveLights power levels.

The Rovelight RT 610 are also just the start of the Orlit radio flash system.

    This looks like it could be a real winner with a well thought out system. Pretty much everything I have on my wish list – from AC adapter to smart phone app. Maybe Adorama will give Flash Havoc readers an introductory price like they did the original Rovelights? =D

      They’re already throwing in the transmitter 🙂

      Adorama managed to get a sample sent over a few days ago, and so far the TTL and HSS are working very well as a slave to the Canon 600EX-RT and ST-E3-RT. So in that regard I think they are a winner. Its a huge advantage to Canon RT system owners.

      The TR-611C transmitter works well in RT mode as well, though the interface is not as nice as the ST-E3-RT etc.

      UPDATE – TTL is very consistent when using the Canon RT units as transmitter.

      Though on further testing the TTL is a little inconsistent at times when using the TR-611C as transmitter in RT mode on the Canon 6D, and more inconsistent with an older camera like the 7D. The Canon RF mode is more consistent with the 6D, though not working properly at all with the 7D.

      The Nikon TR-612N just arrived so I haven’t had a chance to try that yet.

    The specs on this look sooooo good. I’m curious, what does one do for repairs? Does Adorama service or do they become expensive paperweights when something goes wrong? I’m tempted to buy into a system like this (or Godox and the like) but I’m held back by the support or lack thereof.

      Hi Daniel,

      Yes its an impressive flash.

      Regarding the servicing, the flash comes with a 2 year warranty to start with, though your best bet is likely to go with extended warranty, and even drop and spills cover to look after damage.

      Adorama do have something of a connection with a repair center, though I really don’t know what services would actually be available in that regard when needed. Probably best to speak to the Adorama brands team directly about that – brands@adorama.com

      For people that need the Canon master flash, I think the choice is pretty well made.

      I actually sent Godox an email yesterday regarding this post, and hoping they may provide something at least for plans to refine the V860II. Though no reply at this stage.

      The one thing I personally think makes it a tough decision is the lack of any remote head option for the RT 610. I think its a big advantage to have that option still with the XPLOR. That doesn’t stop people buying the Profoto B1 etc though.

      The other thing again I would like to see a compact cordless 360Ws strobe for the system. Both companies need that though.

        I use 6 AD360s and I do not miss my Einsteins one bit.
        They are light and powerful and easily get even demanding jobs done. I do agree that it would be great to have the battery and strobe integrated as setup time would be nearly zero.

        Why do they only offer 600ws versions?

        I would be very interested in 250-300ws monolights which can mount properly on modifiers, unlike their ad360, ad200, etc.

        They should offer a complete lineup ie 200, 300,400, etc of power outputs at different price levels.

        Right now, having to choose between the ad600 and the, frankly gadgety looking ad360, which sell for almost the same amount of money, is not exactly great.

      Hi Don,

      I just gave it a try now, and the short answer is mainly no unfortunately.
      .

      The long answer is the YN-E3-RT would not link up with the RT 610 strobe at all on its own.

      Though I was able to link up the flash by starting the original Canon ST-E3-RT first, and then turning on the YN-E3-RT. In that case the YN-E3-RT appears to work ok, though as soon as I turn off the ST-E3-RT, the link is lost with the YN-E3-RT as well.

      So in one sense this was still useful as I could use the ST-E3-RT on a 6D etc, and at the same time use the YN-E3-RT on a 7D (which still provides GR mode on the pre 2012 camera).

      But I have to remember to switch the YN-E3-RT off every time before using the ST-E3-RT, otherwise that won’t fire. And in general bump starting the ST gear like this is quite likely going to run into an issue somewhere.

      The YN-E3-RT transmitter I have is the pre-mid 2015 model, so still on V1.16 firmware. So there may also be a slight chance the later transmitters may have more luck.

      I can’t get the YN600EX-RT to link with the Orlit RT 610 flash at all. Having the ST-E3-RT switched on at the same time does change the YN600EX-RT link indicator color, though the Orlit is still not responding to the master flash at all.
      .
      UPDATE – Adorama are looking into what they can do about YongNuo compatibility from their end. Nothing is guaranteed though, so don’t count on this.

        That is very strange. I was completely sold until I read that the YN-E3-RT doesn’t work. Maybe a firmware update can fix this? Probably not even worth it for Yongnuo to do this, but would be worth it for Orlit to do it?

        My question: Is there any hope for it to work in the future?
        Should I just get a Canon ST-E3-RT?
        Sell all the Canon/Yongnuo stuff and get Orlit Mono and speedlites?
        Maybe go with a full XPLOR system?

        Everyday some cool new flash releases and leaves me with more questions than answers.

            Thanks for the update! Ideally I would like for the YN-E3 to work but worst case I will just buy a Canon Unit, these are proven to work correct?

            Also, if I need to use a 600 as master, while I do have a YN600 I also have the Canon 600EX as well so that’s a non issue. If using a canon 600EX or Canon ST-E3 as master, will the YN600 work as normal as a slave along with the RT610?

              Yes the Canon ST-E3-RT, and 600EX-RT are working well as masters / transmitters to the RT 610.

              And yes the YN-600EX-RT works fine as an RT slave alongside the Orlit RT 610, or RT 600C speedlites used as RT slaves (to the original Canon maste units).

              The other transmitter option is simply to use the TR-611C transmitter supplied. The TTL is a little inconsistent with my 7D, though the 6D it seems reasonably good. I’d have to check the 5DIV again.

              I don’t like the TR-611C user interface much, though some people may be more patient with it. The display is actually a bit larger and easier to read than the Pixel King Pro (though accessing groups easier via the rear buttons has not been updated like the King Pro).

          Hi Jeffrey,

          I’m caught up with some other large projects at the moment so it may be while before I can do more full reviews. I am working towards doing more reviews eventually though, and hopefully better than previously.

          The TR-611C transmitter are not particularity great even by Adorama’s own admission. They are even considering possibly designing a new one with Jinbei (as we have been working on with Godox currently).

          I think the main additional features are –

          – Modelling light control – On / Off (Must switch to RF mode each time to use)
          – Second Curtain Sync
          – Gr style interface with pre 2012 cameras (3 groups)
          – TTL pass through hotshoe on top
          – Up to 300M range (untested).

          Though the TR-611C user interface is not ideal. I could be wrong though I think for that reason alone most people will prefer to use the Canon ST-E3-RT unless one of the above features is really needed.

          The TTL consistency is not great on my 7D though, so that makes the pre-2012 Gr style interface feature not of much use. (TTL consistency is better on my 6D etc).

          Where the Canon transmitters where just consistent straight away on all the cameras, and the user interface is familiar and straight forward.

          The range of the TR-611C (and possibly even the RT-600C speedlite as master) could be interesting though, as the King Pro can go around twice the range of most TTL radio triggers. That could be handy at times if it proves to work with the RT radio system as well.

          (After seeing the TR-611C/612N, I can see they are not made by Pixel btw, though they are most definitely based closely off the King Pro format, nobody can deny that).

      Just out of interest I had to bump start the Shanny transmitter in exactly the same way as mentioned above with the YongNuo unit.

      If you get the orders wrong though it basically locks up the strobes radio communication and everything needs to be switched off and rebooted to get things working again.

    I wonder if the Orlit system will work with the original Jinbei remotes, etc… I’ve been looking at the Jinbei HD610 for a while, but if I can get something that is a bit closer, should I ever need repairs. Since I’ve already invested into the Jinbei systems…

    Are you able to test out the original Jinbei remotes TR-a6 or TR-a611/612 with this to see if they work?

      Sorry I don’t have the original Jinbei transmitters at the moment to confirm, though I think its highly unlikely that they wouldn’t work, because the system all has to work together with the new Jinbei RT speedlites etc as well.

      The Jinbei transmitters or HD 610 don’t have the Canon RT though (at least at the time of writing this).

    Very interesting. I have a couple of AD360 II-C that I use with the X1T-C /S trigger but I also have one Phottix Laso that I use on the hotfoot to make it Canon RT compatible which works really well. I’ll have to decide if I want to have just Canon RT if I buy this or keep with Godox and get TTL & HSS with both my Canon and Sony Alpha systems. These are hard choices but it’s great that the options are multiplying.

      I checked with Jinbei and they hope to have Sony compatibility after the Chinese NY holidays.

      I wouldn’t rely on that timing, though the point is they are working on Sony compatibility, and it will be implemented via a firmware update at the strobe end. The transmitter would be a separate Sony version of course.

      As you mention the the AD360II-C and Laso receiver are one of the main other RT option (and the best (only) compact option at the moment), though the one possible problem is that there is no guarantee they will remain compatible with future firmware changes (from Godox, Phottix or Canon).

    UPDATE – A bit sad to say the 610 does not have the same power as the old RoveLight (HD 600).

    They are about the same as the XPLOR 600, if not a few tenths less, depending on modifier.

    So between 2/3rds and a stop behind the original RoveLight. Some of that is likely due to the flash tube recessed into its own reflector on the original RoveLight.

      Just to add, in HSS mode the RT 610 does provide up to half a stop more light than the XPLOR. Though that’s also because the RT 610 has more gradient. So that gain is not over the entire flame.

      For Long Duration Sync, both strobes require an external radio receiver attache via PC sync cord to bypass the strobe automatically going into pulsing HSS mode. The TR-611/612 have no timing adjustment, so Godox, YongNuo, Phottix etc triggers are needed if you want to refine the results for more power.

      FH, I really appreciate you looking into the difference with the xplor. I see a few things I like about this new strobe. But I think the best part is Adorama is providing some reasonably priced lighting solutions. Between this and the Flashpoint system you can’t go wrong.

      Hi Spencer,

      No it won’t unfortunately. That capability is simply not built into the RL600 / Jinbei HD600.

      Also the new TR-611C, and TR-612N don’t actually have any TRS mode, so they can’t fire the RL600 at all (unless you mount the TRS transmitter on top or the TR-611/612).

      The later Jinbei HD600V strobes do have the ability to display their power levels at the transmitter end, though you need the TR-A6 transmitter to do that. And there is no group control then with either the HD600V or HD610 when used in A6 (TR-A6) mode.

      Adorama would certainly have liked Jinbei to work with them on a transmitter to help bridge the 2 RoveLights (and I had some long and frustrating discussions with Jinbei on this as well), though they have basically moved on now to developing the 610 range, so it is what it is now.

      For the RL600 alone the TR-A6 transmitter will at least now provide the HSS signal and remote power control in the one transmitter unit. So the TR-A6 are something of an upgrade from the TRS transmitters.

    I have the ST-E3-RT with two 600 EX II-RT speelights, and I was just about to give up with the Canon system as far as strobes go, and buy a Flashpoint XPLOR. Now, my prayers are answered, and I only need my one Radio Transmitter (ST-E3-RT) to communicate with all my flash devices!

    It seems like you have already done some testing with the ST-E3-RT with the RT-610. Can you let me know how well the ST-E3-RT can communicate with the RT-610? Are you able to change the light from Manual to TTL, adjust the output power, HSS, and all that with the ST-E3-RT? Actually, do you plan to make a video of the initial impression of the light? If so, can you talk about the integration of it with the ST-E3-RT?

      Hi Jeffrey,

      Yes I think this is game changer for Canon RT users. (The Phottix Indra500LC are another RT option).

      From the ST-E3-RT (or Canon 600EX-RT etc radio master mode) you can control everything on the RT 610 just as though it was a big Canon RT slave speedlite.

      The one limitation is that you can’t turn the strobes modelling light on and off remotely from the Canon RT transmitters, as that function is not part of the Canon system.

      The other limitation with the ST-E3-RT is no second curtain sync, though again that’s due to Canon’s system. The TR-611C transmitter should allow SCS though.

      As mentioned previously I had to bump start the Shanny transmitter in exactly the same way as mentioned with the YongNuo unit. It won’t work unless there is a Canon master switched on first, and running at the same time.

    Hi, The settings are comparable and quite easy to use together. The Jinbei adjusts in stops & 1/10th stop increments. The Canon system of say from 1/2 to 1/4 is also 1 stop adjustment – but the intervening increments are 1/3 rd stops. In practice, it causes no problem, IMO.

      Hi Allen,

      Yes, in a double diffused sofbox (Glow ParaPop 38″) I get 1.5 stops more light from the ORLIT RT 610 modelling light, over the XPLOR 600.

      Using the same ORLIT 5.5″ reflector on both strobes I get 2.7 stops more light from the ORLIT RT 610.

      The difference there is the XPLOR’s modelling light has a pretty uneven light pattern, unless its diffused, or the flash bulb is removed so that is doesn’t block the LED light.

      So removing the XPLOR’s bulb provides another stop of light in the reflector, but only 0.3 stops extra in the double diffused softbox. Still at least 1.2 stops behind the ORLIT RT 610 (which makes sense at 10 watts Vs 20 watts).

      The RT 610’s modelling light is warm 3200K though, where the XPLOR is around 5500K.

      The strobe itself has 5 groups. Its only the TR-611C/612N that are limited to 3 groups.

      If you use a transmitter like the Canon ST-E3-RT you have 5 groups to work with in TTL or Manual.

      Hi Joe,

      The Canon RT system is designed to allow multiple shooters, so with the same lights you should both be able to use your own settings.

      On a quick run the TR-611C that appears to work the same way (as a ST-E3-RT etc), though I don’t know if you may possibly discover quirks with the TR-611C in practice used like that.

      Worst case scenario is you would need a second Canon transmitter or master flash.

          I spoke a bit too soon, would you believe I’ve actually run into a bug trying to use 2 transmitters / master units at once.

          Basically this is not working unless I switch on another RT slave speedlite. Otherwise the 2 transmitters link to the RT 610 strobe, though only one transmitter will have its recycle ready / test fire light lit, so that it can fire the strobe. Turning on another RT speedlite, whether its YongNuo, Orlit, or Canon, does the trick to instantly light up both transmitters recycle ready / test fire buttons.

          This is using 2 original Canon transmitter / master units. When I was mixing the TR-611C with an ST-E3-RT things went haywire at one stage and I couldn’t get anything to link again.

          When thing are working though (via the workaround above), you can run completely different setting on each cameras and transmitter, and the RT 610 strobe will automatically adjust to each camera.

    This may be a stupid question, but is there a risk with using the Wescott Rapid Box XXL Bowens mount octabox with this? It says it’s rated for 500 watt lights (aimed at Profoto, I guess, even though that’s a different mount) but is it really that much of a risk to use it with a 600watt light like this? Having trouble finding good bowens mount quick-folding octaboxes rated for a light like this.

    Joe, Great question…. I might be wrong, but as I read the literature on the Westcott Rapid box, it can also be used with constant lights like their uLite. So I read the 500 watt maximum for a continuous light source, not a strobe flash with 600 watt seconds.

      I’ll try and do a comparison with a halogen modelling light. Though I’d think its likely around 75 watt equivalent, if not less.

      Its certainly considerably better than the AD600B, though they are still really not what they should be. Most manufacturers are looking to the Profoto B1, though they are purely a battery strobe.

      The LED modelling lights really need to step up (I’ve been harassing Godox about this for some time).

        UPDATE – My guess was wrong above, through a double diffused 38″ ParaPop the ORLIT LED is actually reading the same as a 150 watt halogen modelling light.

        And in standard reflectors the ORLIT LED is generally quite a way ahead as its more of a focused beam.

        In the ParaPop they were reading F2.0 +0.3, 1/60s, ISO800, at 5 feet.

        And the AD600B’s LED was 1.2 stops less in the same softbox.

      I’m not sure if the Jinbei manuals are any more detailed.

      Yes you can use the Canon ST-E3-RT transmitter. I think it generally works better than the TR-611.

      Just set the flash to Canon RF radio receiver mode, and you will see the radio symbol turn to green once it links with the RT transmitter.

      The flash doesn’t like it much if you switch the transmitter back and forth from RF to RT signal (using TR-611).

    Please let me know when/if the issue with the yongnuo 600 gets fixed. I have four yongnuo’s (although one no longer lets me enter a four digit ID.. only 3 digit… weird) and two Einstein lights. The slow sync speed drives me nuts and having to use a separate power supply is often a deterrent from using the larger lights.

    I would order two now if I knew it worked. Maybe the orlit speedlights will be cheap solution…. (now how much can I get for my einsteins?)

    My partner and I both have the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT and several Yongnuo 600’s, and it is disappointing that the Orlit 600 does not work with the system. I may have to get a Canon ST-E3-RT transmitter because the Orlit TR-611 does not work with the Yongnuo 600’s and I do not like the operation of the TR-611.

    I like the Orlit 600 but haven’t actually used it yet because I’m trying to sort out the triggering issues.

    I have taken the Orlit Rovelight out already on two different shoots. Once with the Canon ST-E3-RT, and another time with the 600 EX II-RT. Something I noticed was, if I walk too far away from the Rovelight, causing the link between the transmitter (either the ST-E3 or 600 EX) and Rovelight to be lost, when I get back into range, the ST-E3-RT transmitter would not be able to fire the Rovelight again. I would have to:

    A.) cycle through the different radio modes on the Rovelight and get back to Canon,
    B.) turn off/on the ST-E3 or 600 EX,
    C.) or turn off/on the Rovelight to get the link back.

    I try these three different methods mentioned above because it is not guaranteed one of these methods would help me gain the link back. However, there is one way that I noticed would always work. That is to turn on the TR-611 transmitter, and set off a few test shots using the TR-611. After I turn off the TR-611, the link is restored, and I can continue to use my ST-E3 or 600 EX.

    Long post, but has anyone else had this same issue?

    I thought folds here would like to read my quick and preliminary review of the RT 610, after actually using it on a real world editorial cover shoot, that I just posted on DPR’s Canon 1D/5D/6D forum last night. Here it is in it’s entirety:

    Last week, after participating in a thread in this forum – https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/59010733 (“The Orlit RoveLight RT 610 – a great idea. Is it a great product?”) with questions about the Orlit Rovelight RT 610, I ended the thread by noting that I had just ordered one and promising to write a limited and brief review after my first real-world use of the light that I planned would occur yesterday, Wednesday, March 1, 2017. I did use it on the shoot, a cover and inside spread shoot for a national magazine.
    While I can’t show pictures from the shoot – and they wouldn’t be very illustrative in any case – partly because the publish date is months from now, I can talk about how the light worked for me.

    First, I will mention something that will not likely affect others, because it’s probably a one-off quality control error in packaging. However, it did happen to me. When I first received the unit, and removed it from its very nice black ballistic nylon travel case to look it over, I took off the front black plastic protective cover which bayonets off the unit with a short Bowens mount twist-off, after pushing the release button on the side. I then turned the unit to the horizontal orientation, and the partially frosted glass dome which covers the flash tube promptly fell off the light onto the floor, breaking into many “interesting” pieces. By the way, when I called Adorama to explain this, they very promptly sent me a replacement ASAP, which I received this morning. I assume some person on the assembly line just forgot to secure the glass cover properly. This is definitely not something that you could take as typical of the construction of this unit; overall, it seems to be made very well, to very close tolerances with high grade “engineering” plastic.

    The unit came from Adorama with, aside from the light and aforementioned soft case, a charger for the large capacity Lithium Ion battery (already almost 100% charged), a synch cord, plus – both separately boxed – an “umbrella” type bayonet mount front reflector and The Orlit TR-611 C Transceiver. Even the boxing seems well made, something I’ve noted in many of the better quality Chinese-made photo goods.
    The battery must be removed to be charged, and it has, on its underside, near the metal contact strips that mate it to the light, a four-light LED charge indicator for easy assessment of battery level. The battery module itself is removed and re-attached in an unusual two-step process: to attach it, one must first slide two very short pins, one on each side of the module, into a molded slot in the battery module well, which is placed at the rear top of the light. Then, you push the module along the slot until it stops, now forming a hinge of sorts, and swing the module down into the well until a latch on the side of the well snaps shut. It’s harder to explain than do, and the fit is very, very tightly.

    Now to the meat of my review. Please understand that this review is not a complete one, but what I learned, by playing with the unit the night before the shoot, and using it in conjunction with 3 other Canon 600 RT’s during the shoot itself.

    First of all, the instructions included with the RT 610 flash, and the TR-611 C are minimal, especially compared to Canon’s monumental book-length manuals. If you have no experience using Canon’s RT system, you might have to spend quite a bit of time figuring out the intricacies of these units, although the large rear screen of the RT 610 flash unit is clear, large and legible, certainly a step above my little Canons’ puny screens.
    In the end, with the pressure of the shoot hanging over my head, I was never able to quite master the art of using the TR-611C transceiver with both the Orlit RT 610 and my Canon RT flash units together in TTL mode. It seemed – but it may have been just the lack of time needed to work this out – that I was never able to get both the Orlit and Canon lights to work together consistently and accurately in TTL. Too bad, because the extra control buttons, top mount flash shoe, nice screen and lower price on the TR-611 C transceiver would otherwise have given it a nice advantage over the Canon unit.

    However, and this is great news, I was able to successfully use my Canon ST-E3-RT with both my Orlit RT 610 and three Canon 600EX-RT in TTL, almost without any issues at all, and the units worked together very accurately in TTL!!! This was a great success, as far as I was concerned. The far greater output power of the Orlit, plus what promises to be a much greater number of equivalent power flashes per charge (that is, per battery replacement on the 600EX-RT’s), plus the far greater availability of more conventionally mounted light modifiers, makes the RT 610 a great compliment with, or even replacement for, my Canon 600EX-RT’s to use in TTL or manual with my 5D3 or 5D4.

    There are three relatively minor things that gave me pause. The first was that, for some strange reason, when I first would test-fire the all the flashes together with the ST-E3-RT test button, only the Canons would go off the first time. Then, after the first failure, every subsequent time, the Orlit would go off flawlessly with the others. After turning things off and trying again, the same pattern would occur each time. Head scratcher. The second annoyance was that I hadn’t tried out the umbrella shaft holder slot in the RT 610’s lower assembly before the shoot. When I got there I found, much to my despair, that the shaft hole was too small in diameter to use either of my relatively slim shafted Wescott umbrellas; I just bounced the light off a foamcore instead. Maybe I just don’t understand that there is a way to fit it my umbrella, but, for now, I’m stymied. Last, compatibility with the Canon 600EX-Rt’s depends on many things, but one of the most important is to match all your units together in setting the “ID number.” This number is a four digit number for the Canons. In the Orlit 610 menu, you have the choice of only a two digit number for the ID. Therefore, it may be hard to match up those numbers properly. I used the number “30” for the Orlit, and the number “0030” for the Canons, and it worked, but that combination was not very obvious from the onset.

    Overall, I was quite happy with the Orlit 610 RT, and for a relatively immature product, I think it works extremely well. And, the fact is that the unit is equipped with a USB port for a computer connection, in order to implement future firmware updates, a good feature for improvement and future-proofing. As far as I am concerned, the jury is out on the TR-611 C transceiver until I can experiment with it further. Overall, however, I’m glad I bought the Rovelight 610 RT, and it should provide a very useful addition to my Canon TTL lighting kit.

      I would say the same to anyone interested in this strobe for the Canon RT. Its real value is as a slave to the original Canon master speedlites and ST-E3-RT transmitter. For Canon RT use the Jinbei transmitter is not really worth messing around with at this stage.

      I haven’t studied the light with the Jinbei Nikon transmitter, though that may be fine working on the RF system.

      Funny you mention the flash tube cover, because mine was not attached to one of the clips as well. Luckily it didn’t fall off and break before I saw it though.

      Adorama took on the strobes mostly as a Canon RT solution, and for that they appear to be winner so far.

      I know I had this issue with the Shanny RT gear, and I’m not completely sure now, though quite possibly with the YongNuo as well.

      And switching the transmitter on and off would not help, I would have to go back to within a meter or so of the slave flash sometimes to regain the link.

      I haven’t really tested the Orlit for range yet, though from what you’re saying I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same issue.

      Did you do a channel scan first by and chance to check for a good signal?

      Again I haven’t had a chance to look at the TR-611 range, though it is quite possible they may have a big range advantage. Thats not much help at this stage though in any case when they don’t work as well as the Canon transmitters.

      I will look into this more. Right now I’m 15 meters (50 feet) away from the strobe which is in another room with the door closed and its still firing fine and retaining link with the ST-E3-RT. So I’ll have to go further to break the link.

      Do you know roughly what sort if distance you were losing the link, and was there any particular modifier you had on the strobe? (if that may possibly be affecting the signal).

    I was really trying to push the limit of the range. I was about 100ft, maybe more away from the strobe when it started to lose the link. It was a really big reception hall. It was just annoying to try and regain the link between the transmitter and the light. I had the glow parapop 38″ modifier on the strobe. I have tried it without the modifier as well, and it did not seem to have the same sort of link issues

      Ok thanks, I still couldn’t break the link today (from a fair distance down the street), though I broke the link myself by turning the transmitter (ST-E3-RT) off, while some distance from the strobe. And I did have the same issues I mentioned previously with the Shanny RT gear.

      To regain the link I would have to go within around 5 meters of the RT-610 and switch the ST-E3-RT on there.

      Having a Canon 600EX-RT switched on as well (as another slave flash in different group) did help to re-link both strobes. I could get to around 15 meters away then while switching the transmitter on to regain link with both strobes.

      In hindsight I should have checked the 600EX-RT on its own in the same situation, to see if that would do any better on its own.

      So yes its definitely something to be aware of, and helpful to know how to deal with if needed. I don’t know if its something Jinbei would be able to change or improve easily though.

      Yes as Don mentioned below, the light goes out while the strobe fires and then comes back on after the strobe has recycled. So it depends on what power level you’re shooting at as to how long its goes off for.

      The modeling light also has the option of proportional control, or full manual control.

      The main issue I have is there is no remote control of the modelling light from the Canon RT transmitters. The button is easy to access on the strobe though, so at least its generally not hard to turn on and off that way.

      I have suggested to Jinbei to provide an option where the light will come on with a half press of the camera shutter. And stay on for a short period, maybe 30 seconds. So as long as your shooting the light will be on, then go off automatically while your not shooting. I don’t know if anything will actually come of that though. Hopefully they can do something.

    So, looks like you can use one of 2 radio control protocols?
    1) the Canon one: So the Orlit transmitter, canon master flash / transmitter, or Orlit master speed light all can control Canon flashes AND Orlit units all together. And you’d be limited to the range of the canon RT protocol which seems to be something like 150 feet outside. ?
    2) the Orlit radio protocol which will allow Orlit master transmitter units (transmitter or speed light) to control other Orlit flash slaves (but not Canon units) and have 1000 foot range.

    Are other brand flashes in this capability mix that I’m missing?

    Also, do we know what the t 0.1 numbers are? Looking to see if it’s faster flash duration than the XPLOR. Right now, even with the t 0.5 numbers it looks slower topping out at only 1/8,000 in normal mode.

    On Adorama they say something about an ‘off camera flash’ something or other coming soon. Any word on if that like a remote flash head for boom arms?

      Hi Ken,

      Yes there are 2 radio protocols to choose from. The problem is the TR-611 transmitters are not as refined as they could be at this stage, (the interface is fiddly, and the TTL is not as consistent). So the RT system with Canon transmitter/master is the standout with the strobe at this stage.

      I haven’t tested the TR-611 range yet, though the Pixel King triggers also state 300m (1000 feet range), when in reality they generally provide around double that of most other TTL triggers, so more around 100m (300 feet) reasonably reliably. So I wouldn’t be expecting 1000 feet range for general use.

      The only other RT strobes available at the time of writing this are the Phottix Indra500LC, though they only provide the RT radio protocol.

      Regarding the flash durations, they are actually faster than the XPLOR 600, though they are a bit untidy around 1/4 and 1/8 power in Normal mode. So the numbers jump from t0.1 1/1000 at 1/8 power to 1/15,600 at 1/16 power. That’s because there is a long tail around the 10% light level which is messing with the t0.1 figures above 1/16 power.

      I’ll have to post all the graphs to show whats going on, though I’ll need few days to put that together.

      Here is the graph at 1/16 in Normal mode.

      And by 1/32 the t0.1 duration is down to 1/27,000, and stays around 1/27,000 – 1/30,000 down to the lowest power levels.

      In Freeze mode its cut off a bit cleaner at many power levels, though only goes down to around 1/19,000 t.01.

    So using the system with a Canon master in Canon RT mode is preferable at present. Is using the TR-611 comparable to using the R2 transmitter on the Flashpoint R2 system?

    If you use the system in Canon RT mode you can trigger and control it all with Canon master Flash or transmitters controlling Orlit slaves, Canon slaves and Yongnuo Slaves? How about a Godox AD360? Any leads on that?

    Does the Orlit switch automatically to HSS when your camera shutter speed goes over sync speed like the XPLOR does?

    So I just had to send an XPLOR600 back under warranty (Bulb popped out while shooting in TTL, caught by softbox, prong and socket blackened) and they didn’t exchange it, but refunded me, so…here I am.

    Thank you for the flash duration date here! Looking forward to the rest you speak of. It looks like the Orlit in normal mode is even faster than in freeze mode at lowest power levels? Interesting. I’d want to maintain a color temp consistency of about plus/minus 200k which is what the XPLOR was, so I’d pretty much only use it in normal mode, so this is kind of welcome news. It appears that this Orlit is as good or better than the XPLOR except with the lack of a 360ws range option in the system and extension heads that you can plug more than 1 unit into to double the power like on the XPLOR’s. If I switch, I’d need to sell my AD 360 and 2 R2 speed lights I got. However I WOULDNT Have to sell my 5 Canon 600 RT’s and Yongnuo equivalents that have been relegated to backups since June. Which way would you guys go?

      Hi Ken,

      1. I guess you could say the TR-611 and R2 are similar in that they both have awkward interfaces to navigate. Though they are quite different interfaces.

      The R2 / Godox X1, for the Canon version at least, have had pretty solid consistent TTL with the XPLOR / AD600 from the beginning. Where with most other larger TTL strobes I’ve tried you can pretty easily start noticing at least some degree of quirks and inconsistency, at least with the early versions.

      And I think the RT610 are like that as well with the TR-611c, transmitter, though they appear very consistent with the Canon RT transmitter.

      2. Yes if using the RT radio with a Canon Master/Transmitter you can control all the Canon, Orlit, and YongNuo slave speedlites.

      With the AD360II-C, you can use that with the Phottix Laso RT receiver, basically turning the flash into an RT slave flash. This doesn’t work with the cheaper YongNuo YN-E3-RX receiver. Though if you just want to fire the first version AD360, then the YN-E3-RX attached via PC sync cord (or possibly also by its hotshoe) is all you would need, as non of the RT receivers can control a non TTL flash like the original AD360. (You would need a Godox transmitter in hand as well for remote power control).

      3. Yes the RT610 goes into and out of HSS mode automatically as you change shutter speeds on the camera. The transmitter would need to be set to HSS mode.

      4. Yes as shown the RT610 has some fast t0.1 times in normal mode. Though there is often a long tail around the 10% output in Normal mode. I’m not that familiar with freezing splashes etc to know if or how much of an in issue that lower level of light may possibly be in the image. Though its certainly making the t0.1 figures look messy when the tail is hovering just above and below the 10% level.

      5. Both the RT610 and XPLOR have some pretty significant advantages and disadvantages at this stage. As far as the performance though you will see with the flash duration graphs how the RT610 are not a clean as the XPLOR. There is more gradient in the HSS output for example. Though those things are not likely going to effect most people in real use.

      The biggest advantage of the RT610 at this stage is the ability to use genuine Canon RT master speedlight on camera. Some people are happy with master flashes like the V860II, where for many others they are currently a complete deal breaker for the whole Godox / Flashpoint system (at least as far as having one combined system for on and off camera flash use).

      As well as obviously for a lot of people who are invested in and familiar with the Canon RT system, and just want some complementary larger lights.

      Another significant advantage of the RT610 over the XPLOR for some people would be the 20 watt (150 watt equivalent) modelling light. And the swivel mount is smooth, I don’t think anyone would miss the janky Godox swivels.

      Major advantages to the XPLOR are the remote head option, and basically the complete Godox system. Including numerous lights like the AD200 and AD360, as well as being a couple of years ahead with their radio system development.

      As you have likely heard we are in the process of developing some new X2 transmitters which will be available later in the year. And Godox are intending to add Fuji, and Micro Four Thirds support this year as well. (Which may be good and bad, more gear = more loose ends).

      So unfortunately I don’t have any simple answers, you just have to weigh up what personally suits you best.

      Also regarding your previous Adorama “off camera flash” query, I couldn’t find that quote, though the flash Jinbei will be adding to the system is a new version of the Discovery, battery pack and head system. Which will have TTL and HSS etc (and RT compatibility).

      So its not a remote head for the RT610, or a 360Ws cordless strobe unfortunately. Though it goes some way to cover those issues/needs. A 1200Ws would be very interesting for some people as well.

      I’d love to be able to say one system or company looks the most promising, though its often still a battle at this stage to get most of them to see common sense on some important points. That’s not to say they haven’t come a long way already, and there is some great gear available now.

    Thanks so much for your insights.
    Yeah, I’d love to be able to use my Canon 600 EX’s on camera at events while using a higher powered light off camera. Mostly because the Flashpoint R2 Speedlights (I always forget the convoluted model #) as on camera master are SOOO stiff to pivot the head around when trying to bounce flash that I’m worried the torque is going to wreck my camera’s hotshoe. The foot on one already broke and it doesn’t connect/communicate right while on camera. Barely used it. The interface is sufficiently like the Canon 600 EX’s so that’s not really ‘the thing’ for me with those speedlights but rather that physical functionality.
    The R2 transmitter I don’t mind when using multiple flashes (both R2 speedlights, XPLOR600, AD360) in studio situations.

    But, the larger AD600/XPLOR isn’t the go-to for off-camera at events. I’ve found the AD360 (except the wire/battery mess, ugh) is ideal. But there are no plans apparently for the Orlit to fill this void it appears.

    So I guess I’m leaning toward keeping the R2 system because of the range of lights available. But have you heard of a way to make those speedlights less stiff for on camera swivel head positioning?

      With the Godox / Flashpoint stiff tilt swivel, all you need is something to dilute the sticky grease a little. I’m not sure what other people use, though I just twist the head 90 degrees and spray a little bit of WD-40 spray in the pivot joint. And do the same in the 2 side joints of the tilt pivot mechanism.

      Edit – Super Slick Stuff was another lubricant some other readers recommended previously. Its non petroleum based so may be a better option.

      That frees the head up nicely, though I don’t know if it could possibly get inside the flash and cause any issues, so I would just use a very small amount to start with.

      People shouldn’t have to be doing that though, and we have really pressed Godox to get some answers if they are going to start taking a refined master flash seriously, as its not on their agenda at the moment.

      The interface of the V860II etc is not a big issue, as you mention, that just needs minor tweaks. The major issues are the stiff head, average AF assist light, fast overheating / limited shots, and currently the TTL consistency even appears pretty ordinary on the Canon version, and there have been some similar reports with the Nikon version now as well.

      Regarding the Orlit strobes, there is actually a small image of the ROVER RT at the bottom of the pager here under the “Comming Soon” banner.

    Yes! The Rover RT was what I was referring to above that you referred to in a previous reply as my “previous off camera flash query”. it was the Rover that I saw. But I looked at Jinbei’s site, and it’s likely a rebranded version of Jinbei MARS-3 here: http://www.goldenshell.com.cn/en/product/detail.aspx?id=428
    which doesn’t seem greatL No power spec really except GN#, no Bowen’s mount for modifiers… etc Not what I’d call a 2 AD600 with 1200ws extension head equivalent.

    THANK YOU for the advice on making the Flashpoint speedlight masters less stiff to tilt and pivot. I will look for Super Slick Stuff.

    That’s curious to hear about TTL with Godox even with Canon. Do you think that’s why my XPLOR600 fried recently? Like I mentioned above, I was shooting in TTL with a medium softbox on and I heard a loud pop with nuked overexposed image, then the light stopped working and I couldn’t figure out why till I opened the front of the softbox to find the bulb not attached anymore! It had popped out by itself and the softbox caught it. Prong bent and blackened, and the socket hole on the head was blackened where that bent prong was. – Is there a bigger TTL problem this is a symptom of do you think? This unit has received so many good reviews I sort of find it hard to believe and tend to lean toward My unit was just a bad one. But…I was on a marketing shoot and thank goodness I had other flashes with me that I didn’t need so one could take over for that one. I just hope these Godox/Flashpoint R2 units are reliable.

      Thanks, yes the ROVER RT does look like the Jinbei MARS-3 for sure. Going by the battery capacity it looks to be around a 300 – 400Ws unit. In which case it is a bit of a shame then that its not a cordless strobe. Again the inspiration looks to be from Profoto with their B2.

      I’m not sure what happened their with your XPLOR 600, I haven’t heard of that happening before. I would imagine the bulb has most likely come loose first, and then started to lose contact, so the current jumps across the air gap between the contact pins and socket to keep flowing, and arcs out like a welder causing the blackening.

      I doubt anythings actually gone pop and pushed the bulb out, or anything to do with TTL. Just somehow the contact pins/socket were likely not right or loose etc.

        SO thanks for your thoughts about the XPLOR 600. It’s a bit concerning why the bulb got loose and that happened (what you describe seems likely) it also makes me feel a bit better about the unit and re-buying it. Although if the eVolv200 was out yet, I’d probably just buy that. BUT, I’ll probably re-buy the XPLOR and get the Evolv and between those 2 and 1 speedlight and the Streaklight 360 I should be in good shape for most things. I’m just not sure if I want t 2nd speedlight. I had 2 but sent the 2nd one back today because the hot shoe was loose and not communicating with the camera and a bit floppy on camera actually.

          I received some feedback from Jinbei, and they will be doing 800Ws and 1200Ws versions of the MARS-3 as well. (I thought we had discussed a 1200Ws unit with Flashpoint at some stage recently).

          Jinbei are also very interested in, and looking into a compact cordless strobe. As with the above to have TTL, HSS, and RT compatibility.

            Cool. But looks like they have a super bulky battery pack on the higher watt packs and heads which appear to be the Discovery line and the head isn’t small either. Also, no way to mount mods onto the heads it looks like.

              Sorry I forgot to mention the heads will also have S-type and Profoto adapters available.

              I’m not sure if they are going to use the same case and battery as the previous Discovery. Though 1200Ws units would require decent size batteries in any case if you intend to use them at full power.

              The recent Elinchrom 1200Ws battery flashes provide 2 battery size options, which would be handy of you’re not using them at high power all the time.

                  I actually used windows 10 when I first attempted the installation because there was no disclaimer on their website (there is now).

                  I tried reinstalling using windows 7 and I was able to get the updated version icon to show but my flash still does not work in TTL or manual HSS. I’m sure other things are also not working but I didn’t have the will power to continue testing. It’s basically broken and I am beyond pissed.

                  Adorama will not give me a straight answer as to what’s happening. I don’t know if my unit is permanently damaged because I attempted the installation using windows 10 or not. I have several photo shoots lined up and rely on that flash unit.

    So I just downloaded and installed the Orlit 610 flash and transceiver firmware update via Adorama and it broke the f…… flash. Well not totally broken but it won’t work now in high speed sync mode without severe overexposure. Just a heads up to anyone else thinking of updating the firmware.DON’T DO IT. Awaiting email back from them now.

      How did you confirm the firmware was flashed? I tried updating but there’s no indication of success of failure. Welcome screen did not show the version number as noted on Adorama’s site.

        I didn’t notice my welcome screen as updating the version number either.
        I think it didn’t install correctly.

        I spoke with the Adaroma tech and he said the update can only be installed via windows 7 computer (now the disclaimer is on the website, it wasn’t when I attempted the update using windows 10).

        I will have to try the update using a computer at work tomorrow since I only have windows 10 and a macbook pro.

      They still don’t have a firmware that works yet so that will probably come first.
      My flash is currently 100% broken. It only works on power level 3 on manual mode.

        because they think continue shot need more quickly recharge time

      I wouldn’t install it..I installed it and now my flash doesn’t work in HSS mode with manual or TTL.
      I hear other people have the same issue. I have a 5dmiii.
      Really pitiful they didn’t fully test the firmware before releasing it AND it doesn’t even include any patch notes.
      If they can’t resolve this soon I am going to be forced to return to go with the xplor 600 instead which I don’t want to since I am a canon shooter. Adorama has handled this situation VERY poorly with lousy communication.
