Phottix LUNA Folding Beauty Dish and Softbox Released

Phottix have release the new Luna range of quick folding Beauty Dish and Softboxes.

The Luna modifiers use strong and resilient white fiberglass rods, and snap open very quickly using a series of hinged framework between each pair of rods. No tedious or difficult assembly of separate rods and speedring as regular octoboxes usually require.

The Luna Beauty Dish version is approximately 70cm (or 28″) in diameter, and can be used as a regular softbox as well by attaching the included front diffuser cover.

The Luna Softbox version is 110cm (or 43″) in diameter, and works on the same principal as the the beauty dish design.

An internal reflector disk and white heat proof interior fabric will create soft even coverage inside the softbox, without the need for a second fabric diffuser panel inside the sofbox.

Both Luna Softboxes and Beauty Dishes come standard with a Bowens-compatible mount, which can also be used with the Phottix HS Speed Mount and hot shoe flashes like the Phottix Mitros. Compatible mounts for Elinchrom, Profoto and Balcar are also available, and can be easily swapped over, making the Luna series compatible with many popular studio lights.

Most regular design octoboxes around this size are only 90cm (or 36″), and the next size up is a much larger 1500 (or 60″), so the 110cm offers a very practical mid size option, which I know a lot of people have been looking for. With the quick pop open set up, the Luna looks to be an ideal octobox for location work.

Extra speedring inserts

These looks very interesting, and I think I’m going to order the BD right away! 🙂

By the way, I am a new reader on your website and I just ordered the new CL-180 that you wrote about earlier this year. What do you think would be the best way to attach this type of modifier to the CL-180?

So far I’ve pretty much only used umbrellas and softboxes that attach via shaft.

    Great website btw. Bookmarked!

      Hi Leon,

Thanks for that, you will need a bracket like the HS Speed Bracket That attaches directly to the Bowen’s mount which comes with the Luna. The ideal way would be using a speedring insert suited for the CL lights, but that doesn’t really exist as yet. You would have to buy the Chimera version and possibly DIY it to fit. Just using the HS Speed Bracket should give a really nice result with the bare bulb inside the Luna though. Thanks.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. I’ll go with the HS speed bracket then.

Btw, both links at the bottom of your article leads to the BD. Just a heads up. 🙂

Great thanks Leon, I have fixed the links. Thanks again.

I am actually in the same boat as Leon, but I have the CL-360.

Do you know if the HS speed bracket has a stud for the 1/4″ 20 flat base, or is it shoe only?

Great blog btw! This is my first comment here

      Thanks Morgan,

Yes the HS Speed Bracket has a 1/4″ 20 thumbscrew, which you would screw directly into the base of the flash, instead of into the clamping coldshoe which the bracket also comes with. Thanks.

How heavy is the Phottix Luna Folding Octa Softbox (110cm)?

It seems to be quite heavy as phottix is charging $38.4 for shipping as opposed to $15 for a 60 inch parabolic umbrella.

I intend to use it on Jinbei FL II 500 and want to know whether it will be able to take the weight.

      Hi zubpho,

The speedring would have more weight in it than an umbrella, even though that’s larger.

But you might want to drop Phottix an email and check if that postage is correct (as you described compared to other items), as something doesn’t sound quite right there.

I can’t see it being all that heavy really.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I have emailed phottix about the shipping fees.

      • zubpho 8 years ago

        Phottix has replied stating :

‘ The shipping cost is correct.

Since the cost depends on the weight of the product’.

So I will give it a try to see if FL II 500 flash head can handle that weight.

Just bought the 43″ version. They have them on Amazon now for $85 shipped (prime) which is a great deal. Will post up the results on Monday or Tues when it arrives. 28″ will follow. We have the 19″ Cheetah Collapsible’s as well so it’ll interesting to see if these are all replicas.

Fantastic, thanks for that. The Cheetah 19″ is a little different though, as its more of a traditional umbrella style frame. Its very handy that it attaches straight to the flash head though.
