PIXEL – KING PRO for SONY – Released

Pixel HK have release a Sony Alpha compatible version of their King Pro, TTL and HSS enabled radio transceivers, previously available for Canon and Nikon DSLR systems.

Pixel were originally one of the first manufactures to develop TTL radio triggers for the Sony system in their original King Transceivers. Though they were eventually discontinued as Sony transitioned to the new Multi Interface Hotshoe design.

Now with the rise in popularity of Sony Alpha cameras Pixel have returned to development of the Sony system again. With the King Pro Transceivers for Sony now providing a Multi Interface foot below, and full Multi Interface TTL pass through hotshoe on top.

The King Pro for Sony provide TTL, HSS (High Speed Sync) to 1/8000s, SCS (Second Curtain Sync), and LDS (Long Duration Sync) (no pre-sync timing adjustment though).

3 Groups can be individually set to either TTL, Manual, or Off. And TTL and Remote Manual Groups can be conveniently mixed together as needed.

The King Pro also feature exceptional range for a TTL radio trigger system, stated as 300m+ (though in reality around double the 60m workable range most 2.4GHz triggers generally provide in TTL mode).

Pixel are also endeavouring to make the transition to cross compatibility between camera systems.

With the King Pro Transmitter for Sony now providing Remote Manual Power Control, HSS, and Remote Zoom Control, with Canon and Nikon version King Pro, and King X, receiver units.

  • Pixel 2.4GHz X Radio System
  • Range – 300m +
  • Flash Modes – TTL / M / OFF
  • HSS to 1/8000th
  • Second Curtain Sync
  • FEC / FEB – 1/3rd Increments (±5 Stops)
  • Manual Flash – 1/128 – 1/1 Output (1/3rd Increments)
  • Remote Flash Zoom (Auto / Manual) (24-105mm)
  • Groups – A / B / C   (3 Groups)
  • 15 Channels (+ 1 Auto Channel)
  • Dot Matrix LCD Display with 2 Color Back Light (Master & Slave Modes)
  • Modeling flash
  • Auto Memory Function
  • Shutter Release Function
  • Long Duration Sync with Studio Lights etc
  • Sony MI (Multi Interface) Foot
  • Sony MI (Multi Interface) TTL Pass Through Hotshoe
  • Micro USB Port for Firmware Upgrades
  • PC Sync Port

Being transceiver the King Pro can be set to either Transmitter or Receiver mode, which are easily recognizable with their different color LCD backlights.

Though slightly more economical (no LCD display) King X Receiver units are also available to use as dedicated receiver units only.

King Pro Transceivers also provide a mini USB port for firmware updates, and a traditional PC Sync Port.

The Pixel King Pro transceivers for Sony are currently going through final beta testing, and should be available shortly from around $130 a pair –

I would like to know if new Pixel King Pro can trigger old Pixel King TTL for Sony (Minolta hot shoe). I’ve asked Pixel King support and haven’t got answer. AFAIK it works like that for Nikon and Canon versions.

They claim it can trigger Pro for Canon and Nikon.

With their new website they even discontinued support for downloading firmwares for Pixel King TTL…

They don’t list A99 and A77 mkI as compatible cameras too.

Yes I have a similar question. I recently updated my sony camera firmware and now I cannot HSS on the pixel kings which is the only reason why I use them. This means all my pixel kings are useless. I contacted pixel and they have dropped support and told me to buy new ones. I only brought them new less than 6 months ago. Very frustrating.

Hello. I have been able to trigger the old Pixel King TTL w/ Minolta hot shoe Receiver with the new Pixel King Pro for Sony Transmitter device. So far I have only tried manual mode, but all worked as intended.

        Dear LB,
I have the same question as above: Is the new King Pro able to trigger the old ‘minolta hot shoe’ reciever. Can you confirm by now that it works also in TTL mode and HSS?

        • LB 3 years ago

Hello Gert-Jan: The new Pixel King Pro for Sony works very nicely with the older Pixel King for Sony ( Minolta Hotshoe). For sure, I am able to trigger my old Pixel King for Sony Minolta Hotshoe M/TTL, HSS with the new Pixel King Pro transceiver—No problem as I stated in my last post on this forum.

          Couple of notes:
I did have QC problems with these new Pixel King Pros for Sony. The first set of PK Pros for Sony I received would not work in TTL mode. I returned the first set to the retailer as defective. The second set TTL worked M/TTL/HSS, but one of those units would not displkay any data after a few seconds so I had to return one of those unitis as defective. Thankfully the retailer agreed to provide a replacement. Now I have TWO 100% functional Pixel King Pro for Sony transceivers that work 100% M/TTL/HSS also with my old Pixel King for Sony with Minolta hotshoe receivers.

Important Note: Do Not attemnpt to update your Pixel King Pros for PK for Sony to ver 2.0 ! NO NO NO. I have attempted to update to Sony King Pro 2.o several times on both Windows 7 and 10 as well as Mac 10.12. The ver 2.0 update will BRICK your Sony Pixel King Pro. Worse, I contacted PixelHK on this issue but they sent me a very friendly email response with no solution. AKA whoever answers support emails in English at Pixel King in Hong Kong is very polite, but also clueless as to how to solve any issues.

Pixel King Pro wil ship with two transceivers. You can select which is slave and which is master. Again. do not attempt to update to ver 2.0. Leave as is with firmware from Nov 2009 and you wil be fine using these units as is and with your old Minolta hotshoe Pixel Kings.

Hope that helps! Oh and if anyone out there has had a successuful experience updating the Pixel King Pro units to King Pro 2.0 please do tell.

Was tested with A99 here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB_cqqZjnaQ and seems to work very well, even at very long disances.

Today I have received my set of 2 Pixel King Pro transceivers for Sony. My first impression is positive. The transceivers seem to be well build. Just don’t expect the ¼” connection to work. It just doesn’t fit any of my stands. With the old King’s there was a pouch with all the necessary cables and a flash stand. With the King Pro none of this. You will only get the transceiver in the box.
I have tried various settings with my Sony A77ii camera, the Sony HVL 60 and a few old Pixel Kings in combination with the Minolta 5600 HS. The firmware on both transceivers is V001. I haven’t tried to update yet to the V002.
Almost everything is working as it should. With the 2 transceivers I had no problems whatsoever. TTL/Manual is working perfectly. The moment you switch to HSS there is 0.7 EV overexposure but this can easily be compensated. HSS up to 1/8000s is no problem. With the old King’s I couldn’t get higher then 1/500s. This is great.
For me the really good news is that the new King pro is indeed able to trigger the old King with Minolta flash shoe. TTL is working, even in a set-up with multiple flashes. HSS is working again up to 1/500s. But… I can’t do level control from the camera in combination with the old Pixel King. If the camera is in P/A/S mode the flash does only TTL. I cannot put it in manual. If the camera is in M-mode I can select both TTL as well as Manual on the flash but I cannot control the output with the King Pro transceiver. I can only do it directly on the flash. If I mount the Minolta 5600HS with a Sony ADP-MAA Hot shoe-adapter on the transceiver in slave mode then I am able to adjust the levels. For me it’s a pity that level control via the Pixel King is not working. Otherwise I would have a really great system.
The other thing that is not working with the King Pro is the shutter release function. I have been in touch with Pixel and they say that they don’t have a cable for Sony. I happened to have a cable with mini and micro USB (= Sony S2?) but this doesn’t work.
I am still very happy with the set, it does everything it is supposed to do. I am just a little disappointed that manual level control with the old Kings doesn’t work.

I have now updated the firmware to V002. I used the update instruction I found for Canon/Nikon:

Firmware update instruction for Pixel King Pro (apply to both Canon and Nikon)
    1. Remove battery from both transmitter and receiver.
    2. Connect the USB cable to your computer and your Pixel King Pro
    3. Press and hold the “test” button, and turn on the power.
    4. Wait about 5 seconds before you releasing the test button.
    5. Your computer should automatically recognize the Pixel King Pro as ¡§CRP Disabled¡¨
    6. Access the ¡§CRP Disabled¡¨ drive from my computer, and you will see a FIRMWARE.BIN file. Delete it.
    7. Copy and paste the ¡§King Pro for Nikon/Canon.bin¡¨ to the ¡§CRP Disabled¡¨ drive for King Pro (Transmitter)
7a. Copy and paste the ¡§King X for Nikon/Canon.bin¡¨ to the ¡§CRP Disabled¡¨ drive for King X (Receiver)
    8. Turn off the power and unplug the cable.
    9. Now turn it on, and you will see the firmware number on the lower right hand corner of the King Pro screen.

The update proces went very well. Easy, once you know how. After the update everything seems to work exactly as before, with the exeption that there is no overexposure anymore with HSS. Still no power level control with the old Pixel King :-(.

This site said it has AF Assist Light.. where in the front?

I simply can’t not see the red window.

    • Bill 3 years ago

      Quick on the finger..

Should say I can not see red panel in front to the transceiver.

Sorry about that Bill, my mistake. Non of the King Pro models provide an AF Assist Light unfortunately.
