PIXEL X900 – Lithium-ion Speedlites For Canon & Nikon Announced



Pixel HK have announced their first Lithium-ion powered, TTL and 2.4GHz radio enabled, speedlites, in the X900C for Canon, and X900N for Nikon.


The X900 can be powered by either a proprietary Lithium-ion battery, providing 1.5 second full power recycle times, and 700 full power pop capacity.

Or they be powered by external Hihv Voltage battery packs like Pixels new TD-386.




Unlike the popular Godox flashes which pioneered Lithium-ion powered speedlites, the X900 also provide an external HV battery port in the same flash.

So the option of sub one second full power recycle times should be possible with the right external HV battery packs connected.

And along with the X900 flashes, Pixel have announced their own very compact TD-386 Lithium-ion powered external HV battery pack.

The TD-386 still only provide similar 1.5 second recycle times to the X900’s on-board battery, though capacity is extended from 700 to around 1000 full power shots.




Interestingly though the TD-386 also provide a separate 5 volt power supply, which is used to power the flashes interface, without any batteries required in the flash itself.

And the X900 are therefore the first non bare bulb hotshoe flashes capable of running with just an external battery pack, and no batteries needed inside the flash.

So the X900 can effectively go from one of the heavier speedlites available, when loaded with AA batteries, to one of the lightest full powered speedlites, with no batteries inside the flash at all.

As well as providing full on-camera TTL and HSS for respective Canon or Nikon cameras, the X900 also provide 2.4GHz radio Master and Slave modes, compatible with respective Pixel King Pro and King X transceivers for Canon or Nikon.


The Canon version X900C flashes radio Master interface appears to follow the Canon ratio system, which unfortunately does not allow TTL and Remote manual groups to be mixed, or individual groups to be turned on and off easily.

Where the Nikon version fortunately follows Nikon’s more versatile groups style master interface.

Both provide 3 remote groups – A /  B  / C.




As first seen on Pixel’s original Mago speedlight, the X900 also provide a 4 watt LED video or modelling light, supplied with removable diffuser cover.

Now also providing a dedicated and easy to access ON / OFF button located on the side of the flash body.


Also as with previous Pixel speedlites, the X900 provide a PC sync port, external high voltage battery port, and a USB port for firmware updates.

    This looks fantastic. I can’t wait until these are available. I have the Pixel Mago and the Godox’s and I have always preferred the Mago. I find the Godox’s overheat more and the TTL is really unreliable. The lithium ion battery makes all difference though, I use my Godox’s mostly off camera in manual mode for editorial shoots and the speed of set up and recycle makes all the difference. I have to pull out my Canon 580 or the Mago if I am shooting an event. The only real problem I have with Mago is I have to set it manually to 50mm when I am bouncing the flash in TTL mode to work correctly. My Godox 860’s don’t work at all when bounced in TTL mode . The Mago has the LED light which has made it my favourite flash for shooting events. Now I can replace the 6 flashes I carry now with just 3 of these.

      Great to hear comments about overheating. I suspected a china made flash would have overheat issues. The Canon 600s dont have an issue at all with overheating, its programmed to slow the recycle time down to 3-5 seconds when it starts to overheat. I use the AD360 nowadays but when I had 600s the Yongnuos would constantly turn off once it overheats and it’s basically unusable and very unprofessional to clients.

      After only owning my Godox V860iis for a few months I’ve decided to sell due to the extreme TTL exposure inconsistency you mentioned. The Pixels look interesting, though I’d really like to find a complete system (similar to Godox) that offers HHS 600ws strobes with accessories and it doesn’t look like Pixel goes beyond hot shoe flashes.

    It would be nice if a company make a lithium ion battery that you could insert into a canon 600ex the same way this flash does. It would only be 4 instead of 6 but I am sure it would be better than using 4 separate batteries.

      That’s an interesting thought. Its a pity there is a divider post in the center of the 600EX-RT battery compartment, though you would think it could be possible to still form a Li-ion gel battery to fit still.

    I have never had an overheat issue with the Flashpoint version of the Godox speedlight. The Zoom Li-on may have a radio ‘hiccup’ now and then, but still beats the obtuse method of wireless controls like on this Pixel. I can go through a 3 hour session of constant firing, through rapid fire political speeches or slow predicted posing without any loss of dependability. True, I mostly stay in Manual, but my TTL experience with the ZoomLion and the mixed Group mode settings are GOLD! I don’t feel I have to compromise at all with the Flashpoint R2 system.

    The most innovative aspect is the 6AA batteries and the single battery which is not new but the 6AA’s are, why no one else have thought of this. Not only does it increase the number of shots, but also reduces recycle times.

      Hi Robert,

      I think one issue is that people are mainly looking more for smaller and lighter on-camera speedlites now, so adding the extra weight of 6 AA batteries can be an issue.

      That’s where the Lithium-ion batteries can provide a big advantage in reducing size and weight of the flash.

      For off camera use holding even 8 AA batteries would be handy, though again at this stage most people still prefer the Lithium batteries to managing lots of AA batteries.

        I agree about the weight and smaller speedlights also mean lower guide numbers. I don’t mind the weight I never use a speedlight on my camera, I am a off the camera shooter, I also use the Godox PROPAC PB960 which I can’t do with out and two 8 AA battery packs, but the Pixel does not require batteries in the speedlight to function, when using the 8 AA battery pack you must still have four batteries in the speedlight for the speedlight to function, removing the battries from the speedlight would make the weight issue a none issue. Maybe Godox or YN’s next speedlight versions would have the ability of functioning with out batteries installed when connected to a battery pack.

      Hi Jesse,

      Its great that Pixel are innovating and pushing the concept further along, though Godox have had a number of years experience now with the Lithium-ion speedlites, and various battery manufacturers etc. And they would have learnt a lot and had time now to prove themselves.

      Also the Godox batteries are well established as the most common now. Not to say Pixel may not have a great product, though I certainly wouldn’t have any buyers remorse with Godox at this stage.

      Both companies have areas to improve, and competition seems to motivate them more than anything else.

        One issue with the speedlights that use lithium-ion batteries there’s no external battery option, it would be great to operate the speedlight without a battery installed, making the weight lighter.

      It was for the V860, though Godox already have asked the company to stop selling them becasue they have patent protection.

      So it looks like we may not see third party batteries.

        Is the focus assist pattern as good as Canon 580ex II? The HV port now back to standard Canon or proprietary that you have to cut out the notch to make the Canon fit like on Mago? Number of consecutive full power manual blasts until cool down circuit sets in?

          Hi badphoto,

          The AF assist beam looks to be the common basic lazer type pattern. So, no it wouldn’t be as good as the 580EX II unfortunately.

          I think Pixel have adopted the standard Canon HV battery port for a while now. I’m not sure if the current Mago may even have the Canon port as well now.

          The new TD-386 battery pack specifies only 3 cords options – Pixel/Canon, Nikon, and Sony. So I would think Pixel are sticking with Canon port now.

            Hi Elv

            I have the Godox 860ii Li-On with the similar focus pattern, and on the Canon 5Dii, depending on the focal length of the zoom lens, it mostly would miss the focusing point, especially on the telephoto end. You can “nudge” it by pushing or twisting the base of the flash a little to align the center focusing point, while the outer points don’t align altogether. This is hardly ideal, if not useless, for professional assignments, so I’d just turn it off and rely on the 5Dii’s low light focusing capability, which performs better than with Godox focus assist turned on. I don’t know why Godox and Pixel stick to this spread out short lines with a lot of gaps pattern (the Shanny 600SC has better horizontal patterns, though not as good Canon) since it prevents serious use as on camera flash, while the rest of the features are superior to Canon flashes.
            So no news on number of shots before overheat protection kicks in? Also, for the TC-386 the battery pack end of the plug is Pixel proprietary, not standard Quantum 5 pin DIN like Godox 960 packs?

You can run it off a Godox/Turbo style pack with no batteries inside the flash. It’s a really nice feature!

    I have used the Godox PROPAC PB960 with YN685N’s, Shanny’s and Nikon’s you only need to purchase the correct cord, the Canon power connector works for the YN685N’s, Shannys and Canon brand speedlights.

    Does anyone know when these are going to be available? I had the Metz 58AF too! It was the best flash I have ever used. The ttl on it works perfectly every time, better than the Canon. The problem with the Metz is that they are too fragile I have ruined 3 of them and there is no place in the US to get them serviced properly. If they could make those with an internal lithium ion battery and radio control than I would be in speed-light heaven.

    This is it! There is no other flash that gives the flexibility than the pixel x900. I have been very wary of buying lithium ion battery pack flashes. First the cost of buying another pack if one dies, the other the wait to get it. Just about every photographer has aa batteries they use either regular or rechargeable. The pixel mago is very well made and everything functions well. I’m a big follower of Joe McNally and he primarily uses speedlights and powered aa batteries. He is a pro, very well known and gets the job done. I’m just hope that pixel will come out with a ad180, 360 unit at some point. One system all that is needed. That is what I’m talking about

    I really want to try this flash but it not available yet. The pixel king website shows a release date of 2016-11-20 which is about 3 months ago. I sent a email to pixel king inquiring about the release date of the X900N and that’s what I got:

    I am not very sure of the exact launch date. I think it will be ready in one or two months later.

    I’m considering these as I’m about ready to sell my Godox v860ii speedlights as they’re the most inconsistent (using TTL) that I’ve ever used (even compared to cheaper Shanny units). Not only is the exposure all over the place but they also sometimes don’t fire at all. Any update on when these Pixels might be available?

      Sorry Pixel do not provide expected availability times unfortunately.

      I think something has gone wrong with recent firmware in the V860II-C. I don’t have older firmware to compare, though my original V860 are completely consistent in comparison.

        Thanks for the info. I hate to sell my Godox gear since I just stocked up on 2 V860s and the AD360 plus lots of accessories but this inconsistency is a deal breaker and their customer service is nonexistent from my experience. Just not sure the best flash system option to migrate to. The Orlit looks interesting, too.

    Real bummer! I sent I email to pixel to confirm that the X900N can control the King X receiver. The answer is NO. The X900N can not control King X. That means I’m not buying this flash.

    You guys need to correct that sentence on this post: “compatible with respective Pixel King Pro and King X transceivers for Canon or Nikon.”

    X900N can not control the King X receiver. All speedlite can’t control King X receiver. Pls note.

    1. they make a non ttl verison like godox (manual),
    2. make mounts like godox ad200 (for lightstand,).

    I like the ability to remove the builtin battery to lower the weight when mount it.
    Can both the video light be on and use of flash? they need to used cree based instead of the leds.

    Bought this X900C flash, but AA battery holder is not included. It looks like nowhere one can find the AA battery holder or a replacement lithium battery for this flash. How is this even possible?

      Got reply from Pixel:
      Unfortunately we don’t have AA battery holder for X900 flash at this moment.
      We also can’t sell the lithium battery separately to world wide because the very serious policy from the shipper.

        For who is interested, I stress tested this flash to see when it starts overheating:
        – After cold start ~40 flashes at full power (at 50mm) before overheating warning.
        – Overheating warning (battery overheating) stays 2 minutes, flash not usable for that time.
        – After warning disappears around ~20 flashes at full power (at 50mm) before overheating warning comes back.
        – Overheating warning (battery overheating) stays 2 minutes, flash not usable for that time.
        – After warning disappears around ~15 flashes at full power (at 50mm) before overheating warning comes back.

        It looks like overheating protection is just a 2 minute timer when certain battery temperature is reached.

      – Build quality feels solid and good quality plastic and materials.
      – Quick hotshoe flash locking.
      – Battery last almost forever.
      – LED light works in while using flash (video or model light)
      – No complicated menu’s or settings.
      – Easy firmware upgradable (only windows).
      – Flash head turning is a bit stiff (but tilting is okay).
      – LED light is not dimmable (might blind person looking at it)
      – No AA battery holder included and no separate battery for sale at the moment.
      – Turning dial does’t always work correctly (always skips first click).
      – Display fonts could be better (larger and better readable).
      – Overheating protection is just a 2-minute lockout timer.
      – Flash head looks not weather resistant (but with diffuser on one may risk it).

      More testing will follow…

      Did some more testing.
      – Build quality is just good.
      – Quick hotshoe lock is pretty stable and secure (better than yongnuo)
      – Being able to do high speed continues shooting with flash is just awesome.
      – E-TTL functioning looks correct.
      – Pixel King Pro works perfect for triggering this flash.
      – Interface is not always clear when in use,
      fonts to small and lots of wasted space on such a big screen (Yongnuo interface is much much better).
      – Long mode press resets to default without warning (I mistaked with button above for entering slave mode).
      – Not impressed by AF assist light. Does not cover all focus points and isn’t perfectly centered.
      – HV port is custom pixel design (have to cut lower nodge out to fit canon/godox power pack).
      – HV, usb and trigger port protection cover is not separate.
      – Overheat protection looks to kick in too soon in my opinion.
      – Scroll wheel not responding on first click makes me go crazy. It’s a software thing and should be easely fixable, yet all pixel flashes have this ‘bug’.

    – After cold start ~75 (instead of 40) flashes at full power (at 50mm) before overheating warning.
    – Overheating warning (battery overheating) stays 2 minutes, flash not usable for that time.
    – After warning disappears around ~25 (instead of 20) flashes at full power (at 50mm) before overheating warning comes back.
    – Overheating warning (battery overheating) stays 2 minutes, flash not usable for that time.
    – After warning disappears around ~20 (instead of 15) flashes at full power (at 50mm) before overheating warning comes back.

    Hi Folks, Interesting to see various aspects of this x900c NEW Speedlite being discussed. Sorry if I am diverting away from what is being discussed here, but would be great if someone can offer their inputs for my issue. I stumbled upon this thread while I was searching on the Internet whether any other folks had reported any issue with Pixel x800c PRO. I had bought the x800c some 8 months back. The flashbulb got broken yesterday while I was clicking pictures. A smoke came out of it as well. Has anyone experienced this before? I had loaded fully charged AA Rechargeable Eneloops and had taken some 10-15 pics at a stretch when suddenly this thing happened.
    Any suggestions on whether I will get support from this company?

    Opened one up today. Very easy, but do at your own risk, don’t touch high voltage lines inside (deadly!).
    – The AF assist laser is on 4 spring screws and can be adjusted, corrected mine to center.
    – One can loosen the screws of the flash head a bit, now turns much smoother.
    – LED PCB is connected by 4 wires, maybe it is dimmable, but unfortunately not enabled in firmware.
    – PCB’s are all marked ‘Pixel’, flash looks like their own design.

    Not sure about the quality control. Have to return 2 flashes. One now only flashes at full power regardless of it’s settings and the other one doesn’t always flash after it has been turned on or settings have been changed. Maybe I was unlucky or quality control of these flashes is a real issue. To bad.

    Looks like the problems with both flashes started after the firmware upgrade.
    Guess there are bugs in the firmware. Asked for the old version since only the new one is online.

    A quick search online reveals that the cause of only full power flashes is a burned transistor (IGBT) that regulates the flash output. To bad, looks like I got a faulty batch. Only 1 out of the 4 I ordered works…

    I was able to swap the IGBT (irgb30b60k) PCB between working and defect flash and that solved the problem. Since no components look burned or damaged, I think the IGBT is at fault. Will order replacement IGBT to verify if this solves the problem. Looks to me like a batch of faulty nobrand IGBT chips, that die to quickly. Since there is some place left above the component, one might even put a small heatsink on it.

    Strangly enough it is not the IGBT (irgb30b60k) that is broken. Looks like something else on the IGBT PCB died.
    To bad, wanted to really love this flash, but is just to unreliable. Hope they get this problem fixed in the next batch/revision.

    It looks like the flash just dies when you leave the battery in for a few hours when the flash is turned off. Out off al the flashes I ordered, I only have one that still works. Most have died just after serveral days with minimal use. Not sure if the new firmware 003 is at fault or not.
