PROFOTO B1X 500 AirTTL – Cordless Strobe Released



Profoto have release the B1X 500 AirTTL cordless strobe, replacing the original B1 500 AirTTL released almost 4 years ago.

Along with stealthy new all black styling, the B1X provide 3 major upgrades, with increased LED modelling light power, increased battery capacity, and HSS available across the full power range.

  • LED modelling light increased to 24W (130W Halogen equivalent).
  • Battery capacity increased from 220 shots to 325 (no size or weight increase).
  • HSS now available across the entire 9 stop power range.


Along with 2 new OCF reflector options designed to increase light output while still remaining compact and lightweight.

Continuing the welcome trend towards usable modelling lights in portable strobes, Profoto have increased the B1X’s LED modelling light to 24W, now providing 130W Halogen equivalent.

Also now providing a 90+ CRI rating.




Without adding extra size or weight, Profoto have managed to increase the capacity of the B1X battery from approximately 220 to 325 full power flashes.

The MKII battery also being compatible with original B1 strobes.

A 2.8Ah charger fully charges the battery in 2.5 hours, and a 4.0Ah quick charger reduces that time to just 1.5 hours.




Profoto Air Remote transmitter units are now available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus camera systems, providing both TTL and HSS capability.

With HSS now possible over the entire 9 stop power range of the BX1.

The Air Remotes provide a simple interface controlling 3 individual groups, with 8 channels available.

A Hybrid TTL feature also allows for fast metering in TTL, then switch to manual retaining the power levels for further refinement and consistency.



Along with the B1X, Profoto have released 2 new hard light OCF reflectors aimed at increasing the strobes output, while remaining compact and lightweight.

The OCF Zoom Reflector provides up to 1.2 stops more light over the B1X’s built in reflector,and provides a light spread from 55 – 85°.

And the OCF Magnum Reflector provides up to 1.8 stops more light with a light spread from 40 – 80°.

      Ha! I was just going to say that as well… they forgot to drop the price by $500, which would still make it a premium product in the current market.

      Agree! The thing is, there are quite a few photographers who still are willing to pay the HUGE premium…and brag about it.

      Godox is the company to look up to. Yes, they have some kinks but their product is incredibly good. Their equivalent costs less than a 1/4.

      The X1 triggers go for around $35 compared to the AirRemote that sell for $420. I don’t know how a radio costs so much but when you are willing to pay 4-5 times more for a light strobe, than paying 12 time more for a trigger should not deprive you from a good night sleep 🙂

    As it turns out, Profoto have released a firmware update for the B1 to provide the same HSS across all power levels as the B1X.

    And Adorama have a deal running at the moment to provide a Free Air Remote and $100 Adorama Gift Card.

    So apart from the upgraded modelling light, with the $520 saved on the B1 deal, you could buy the new larger battery as a spare, and get a new OCF Magnum Reflector, and still have change left over compared with the B1X!

    Damn! This is one piece of beautiful equipment!

    I go back and forth about investing in Profoto lighting gear. When you can get other really great gear at less than half the price, it can be hard to justify it. For me, it comes down to this:

    If you’re a hobbyist or the occasional wedding/portrait photographer and have no aspirations for anything more, then Profoto is probably not the best option. Like I said, there are really great options out there for much less with great performance and reliability. At least in terms of light modifiers, I’m a huge fan of Photoflex. In terms of quality, I’d say it’s about 80% of Profoto. But even that’s pretty good if you’re careful with your gear. Like me! In terms of results, I think it’s about 90 – 95% of Profoto. But if you can squeeze out that 95%, it’s damn good. Retail customers won’t notice the difference but commercial ones might. But it all comes back down to the person using it. Plenty of pros using Profoto who aren’t squeezing 50% of their gear’s potential…. It’s just bragging rights.

    Any photographer busier than the above person should probably invest in Profoto. I think the biggest reason is: it’s an industry standard.

    While the price difference can be large. The difference isn’t that much if you’re working enough to make that difference back fairly quickly and easily. Another thing to consider is that it could cost you a lot more in a lost client, rescheduled shoot or any other kind of mishap because one of your heads failed or forgot a cable/part and can’t find a compatible one that day. Even some of the junkiest of photo studios you can rent in New York has Profoto heads, cables and accessories.

    You’re also buying into the Profoto ecosystem as well and the options available is second to none. Need some special head or battery pack? Well, you can rent it and you may already have many of the other pieces needed from your own system. So that saves you money from renting the entire system and having to learn it.

    While this may sound like a Profoto commercial, it’s really about the big differences between an amateur and professional. It’s one of the reasons why professionals charge more. To provide the service and professional quality expected.

      Any pro photographer, commercial or portrait, can do very well with the likes of Flashpoint and Godox. The beauty of it is, you can buy four units for the price of one Profoto. So, no fear if one does not work.

      Saying that, I have four Godox flashes that cost me a fraction of the Nikon flash -In fact, all four cost less than one SB-5000. I have had them for two years now and never had any issue whatsoever. Batteries last forever and they keep working.

      Who decides what is the “defacto industry standard”? Is Pocket Wizard an industry wizard? If so, how dare they sell me units that have less than 30 meters range and when shooting short bursts (Einstein strobes), they miss half of them? Why do other radios do better than the “industry standard”?

      Why the AB600 battery lasts double the Profoto’s? And doing that while generating stronger light?

      I would say that smart pros should know where to spend their money.

      You are absolutely right, it is bragging rights more than anything.

      And…when using the Godox / Flashpoint system, I can work all my strobes and flashes on the same radio system. The AB600, Ad360, Ad360II, Ad200, V860II, V860, V850II, V850 etc… All work with each other. Great for maximizing usage of radios and lighting patterns.

    I can concur with Ricardo on the fact that Profoto is the defacto standard at rental houses which makes them easy to rent when commercial shooters are out of town or need parts. That’s a big advantage for those who like me shoot a ton on location. But as a full time commercial shooter I can candidly say that I prefer strobes other than Profoto for value and features. But like all things, it’s up to each individual and the type of photography we’re shooting. My clients care about how I interact with the talent as well as the quality of my imagery, less so about the gear I use. (well except for medium format feel)
