PROFOTO – D2 – TTL and HSS Monolights Released



Profoto have released the D2 500, and D2 1000 Air TTL, AC mains powered monolights.

Which Profoto are calling “the worlds fastest monolight with TTL”, with the D2 having flash durations as low as 1/63,000 of a second, and recycle times providing up to 20 frames per second.




The D2 are the successor to the Profoto D1 series of AC powered monolights, now providing TTL, and HSS to 1/8000th, with Canon, Nikon and now Sony cameras.

While also providing upgrades to the popular B1 cordless TTL strobes, like extended power range in HSS mode, and more refined interface / display and menu system.

With the option of a 1000WS unit, the D2 are one of the most powerful TTL strobes currently available.

And with flash durations as short as 1/63,000s, and providing up to 20 flashes per second, one the fastest recycling monolights available.

The D2 also now provide a full 10 stop power range (in 1/1oth stop graduations), with even the 1000WS unit going down to just 2WS.




The D2 use the same Air Remote TTL transmitter as the B1 and B2 battery powered TTL strobes, available in Canon, Nikon and Sony versions.

And other Profoto Air TTL flashes (like the B1 and B2) can be used seamlessly together with D2 in TTL or Manual modes.

The Air Remote TTL transmitter also provide a hybrid TTL function, where its possible to meter quickly in TTL mode, and then switch to manual (for consistency etc), while retaining the original TTL power settings.

At a time when many of the established lighting manufacturers are in may ways just catching up with the technology from China, Profoto are once again leading the way with the D2.

If theres one catch, its likely that many customers would like to see the B1 being an AC and DC powered strobe, combined with as many of the D2 features as possible, rather than completely separate AC, and DC cordless strobes.

    That’s pretty smchexy looking. Any idea if these will run off batteries like the Vagabond mini? Would it be possible to get 20 fps on sine wave inverters or better to use a generator? These might be really attractive as a poor man’s pack and head.

    According to Profoto USA, these lights are “NOT” portable! There is NO portable battery solution for these lights, not even, Profotos own BatPack will not power them.

    Which begs the question, who uses TTL in a studio? For that matter, very limited need of HSS in studio as well. So if you are on location, you absolutely need power to run these lights. I suspect they did this so as not to eat into the pac/head systems

    I was really excited about these until I found out they wont work via portable power.
