SEKONIC – Survey on GODOX / FLASHPOINT Compatible Light Meter

 

Prominent Japanese Light Meter manufacturer Sekonic have published a Survey asking for feedback on potentially developing a Sekonic Light meter compatible with Godox and Flashpoint lights.

The prospective meter would enable Godox/ Flashpoint users to manually control the power output and remotely trigger their Godox/Flashpoint strobes.

And although Sekonic are genuinely interested in which direction users would prefer, this survey is very likely also still trying to gauge the overall level of support, and whether Sekonic can rationalize their investment in such a product.

So there is still no guarantee that anything will actually be developed yet, and if you are genuinely interested in a Sekonic, Godox/Flashpoint compatible light meter, please show your support and fill out the Survey here.

 

The Survey provides 2 options –

Option 01: Sekonic L-858D (Godox/Flashpoint) radio compatibility.

The L-858D is an incident and reflected (1-degree spot) meter with full photo and cinema functions. It is up to 3 times more sensitive in low light in incident light reading than other Sekonic meters and enables you to measure HSS and Flash duration. The Sekonic L-858D is $599 and an optional Godox radio module would be roughly $99.

Option 02: Sekonic L-478D (Godox/Flashpoint) radio compatibility

The L-478D Godox/Flashpoint­­ would be an incident and reflected (with optional 5 degree-viewfinder accessory) meter with full photo and cinema functions. Like the L-858 it has flash to ambient analyzation, digital touch screen, and many customizable features. It would have a built-in (not removable radio transmitter) Godox/Flashpoint radio module and be priced at $399.

    They should have more options on that survey. I would purchase it if it were the size of the Flashmate L308. Cameras and lights are getting smaller, why design a giant meter as big as a camera? And it would be great if they could design it as a hybrid meter/TTL trigger with hotshot. Not holding my breath on that…

      Sekonic just offered the options that exist now — a module for the meter that can handle HSS and their lower cost option.

        Yes we have been going through the motions on this with Sekonic for a number of years now, and I think they are genuinely concerned they may not get the sales volume required to pay for the cost of developing these (I can only assume they didn’t do too well with the previous PocketWizard etc versions).

        So Sekonic are not going to be developing new hardware just for this, not initially anyway. Though I think once they get started and they see the rate at which Godox is growing I would hope that opens up a new world of possibilities. I think they have a really good opportunity to work with Godox this time, so it would be crazy not to follow through it at this stage.

        I’ve personally suggested I think they really need to expand the appeal of these adding at least a basic flash and ambient color meter. In this day and age I think its crazy to not at least provide a basic color meter (in all the models).

        Also HSS readings should eventually be a standard thing in all models if light meters are going to remain relevant to the wider market. And Sekonic have a great opportunity here to work with Godox and actually make sure the strobes are compatible with the meter in HSS mode (it doesn’t currently work too well with many strobes).

        I have also suggested the meter should have Bluetooth built-in, so that it has the option of relaying setting through transmitters like the R2 Pro II (just like the App currently does), so the transmitter on camera retains consistent settings with the light meter. So not exactly a light meter with hotshoe built in, but still very convenient.

        Sekonic just need to get started somewhere, though I personally think an L-478D with color meter and Bluetooth included would ensure this was a winner. And hopefully they could expand quickly from there.

          they did very well at first with pocketwizard its only lately that godox has been real popular

          Why not develop something a bit different. You mentioned Bluetooth, couldn’t they use the power and screen of a mobile phone and make a unit that just has the sensor on it that’ll talk to the phone. They have to remember the Godox market share is growing but it’s a lower cost option. Not sure how well a meter that costs possibly twice as much as some of the flash units would sell.

    When I was a film photographer in the 90’s i used a flash meter. But when digital came around I just started using the LCD.

      Yes that’s the interesting situation with regards to light meters, with the rise of digital SLR’s many people found they could work without a meter, though at the same time the use of flash lighting xploded as well, so far more people using off camera lighting than ever before (and more light meter sales).

      As mentioned above though I think Sekonic need to expand the appeal of these if they are going to stay relevant to the wider market. And working with the Godox/Flashpoint system would be a major place to start.

    Done.

    I chose option 1 if it’s one or the other or they have to prioritize. Getting HSS output right is sometimes a hassle especially outdoors. And with the Panasonic and their new high-end FF cameras, I think it’s better to go big than small for now.

    Seeing as the trend is now for triggers to have bluetooth support (long overdue IMHO) I think they’d be better off making bluetooth enabled meters.

    Not trying to be funny but are typical Godox users the type willing to spend $399+ on a flash meter?

    I’d love one but it needs to be closer in budget to a upgraded LS-308, perhaps as another poster suggested building in bluetooth to trigger 3rd party triggers.

    I have had the L-358 meter for many years and used it with the PW module and my Nikon speedlights. Still use it with my all Godox setup now, just with the XPro trigger. See no reason to upgrade, but would buy a new RT-32 Godox plug-in module for that unit if it was available.

    I am in the same situation as a previous answer
    I have had the L-358 meter for many years and used it with the PW module and my Metz and Pentax speedlights. and Elinchrom studio strobes. Still use it with my Godox setup now, just with the XPro-P trigger. See no reason to upgrade, but would buy a new RT-32 Godox plug-in module for that unit if it was available

      If you still have a PW receiver you can use it to trigger your Godox lights. Buy an X1T and put it in APP mode (i.e. it acts as a dumb trigger and doesn’t send power settings to the lights). Just trigger the X1T with the PW receiver. The X1T and the PW receiver can be anywhere in the room.

    I too have the Sekonic L-358 with a RT-32 wireless controller module, fires my pocket wizard plus II units properly (guessing I have 8 PWs). Recently, I’ve invested heavily into the Godox/Flashpoint R2 system (5 flashes and 2 XPro-C triggers) and the only short-coming to this setup is the Sekonic, b/c now I have to use one trigger in left hand to fire the light while holding the meter in right hand to measure the light; adjust light using left hand trigger unit, rinse and repeat. I get it, this is a minor couple minute process at the beginning of the photo shoot. But I bought the wireless trigger in the first place to speed up said process; feels like taking a step backwards to have two parts to simply meter the light. But I must remember that this Godox R2 is actually a huge step forward: I can change the power from metering position (or shooting position) without returning to the light! This is a huge time saver. imho, the godox lighting system is far superior to my other setup using PWs, just from the this (power-adjustment) feature alone. Not to mention the portability factor of the smaller, lighter-weight (but just as powerful) light units. I think it is in sekonic’s best interest to push forward with whatever R&D (and overcome any other business blockers) and do something to get into the Godox market. These 2.4GHz transmitters, and the R2 protocol, have made flash photography sooo much more accessible. (I’m guessing every other light manufacturer is sweating bullets because of the R2 units.) Sekonic will loose out if they dont do something… soon.
