All that weight and torque directly atached to the flash mount….. hmmmm…….

Would have preferred to see a dedicated yoke.

      Hi Michael,

That is a good point. Though the SMDV Speedboxes are generally incredibly light weight. The speedring, extra rods, and overall size are certainly going to add some weight, though I personally couldn’t be sure how they actually stack up without trying one.

Maybe SMDV have only released the 160cm and 180cm version first to see how they do fair.

🙂 Still less than half the price of a Broncolor Para. And a fraction of a Breise.

SMDV do appear to have at least 140cm versions of the 12 sided Alpha Speedboxes coming as well, so they should at least be more affordable.

The only thing I see is the tension. There’s a generic one that looks like this on amazon. I think Fotodiox sells them. I bought one and it was horrible. The main problem was the tension once the rods where snapped to the speedring. Hopefully this will be better.

$1200 is steep. Thou I understand why especially if the setup is effortless.

SMDV Korea, in the shopping area, lists the 160cm for 880,000 Won, which is about $782 US. Not sure where $1200 coming from. I see an SMDV dealer in Russia has it listed for $830.

Can you reverse mount the strobe somehow?

      Hi T,

I don’t think you could at this stage without doing some considerable modifications.

You would likely be better off looking at something like the Parabolix mount. Even if you used that with an SMDV reflector with Bowen’s or Profoto mount etc.

In anticipation of purchasing one of these modifiers I created a universal Bowens focusing rod which will work with the SMDV modifiers along with any Bowens mount modifier. I have used it with an Elinchrom Rotalux Deep Octa and have been very pleased.

Fraction of price of Broncolor and Briese but you can’t compare such state of the tools with this newcomer. I worked every day with a 330 Briese system flash and HMI and with a Para88 and 220, they are very, very reliable. Price for such tools as too be mark up at a certain value since they are going to work with you intensively every day for more then a decade.
