YONGNUO – YN560-TX – Finally Revealed!

YongNuo have finally revealed images and details of the very long awaited YN560-TX transmitter unit, which will provide remote manual power control for the popular inexpensive YN-560 III manual flash units.

The YN-560 III flash units were released back in January 2013, having manual RF-602 and RF-603 / II compatible radio receivers built in. As well as remote functions which would only be enabled once a corresponding YN560-TX transmitter unit would eventually be released.

The YN560-TX will support all the major functions of the remote YN-560 III flashes in up to 6 individual Groups.

YongNuo YN560-TX


Powered by 2 AA batteries, the YN560 TX very much resembles the body of the YN-560 III flash unit. Though its considerably narrower and would be much lighter –

Again the front of the unit resembles a flash body. Its unlikely there will be any AF assist light behind the red lens though.

The base of the YN560-TX shows a metal foot with locking pin and full Canon ETTL contacts. Though these are likely only for the flash wake up feature as the RF-603 II etc have.

Provided the specs have not changed, the YN560-TX should be compatible with any camera which has a standard hotshoe.

The YN560-TX are NOT directly compatible with YongNuo’s popular YN-622C and YN-622N TTL systems though, or the recent YN-E3-RT transmitter and coming YN-600EX-RT radio enabled flash unit.

Though Canon YN-622C users may get away with stacking the YN560-TX on top of the YN-622C pass through hotshoe on the camera, to then fire and control both systems.

To fire other non-YN-560 III flashes with the YN560-TX, the RF-603 II can be used as basic manual receiver units.

Once available the YN560-TX should finally unlock the full potential of the very popular and inexpensive YN-560 III flash units, and provide the remote power control many YN-560 III owners have been waiting a very long time for now already.

The YongNuo YN-560 III flash units released over a year ago were set to be the first remote manual radio flash units available. As impressive as the YN560-TX looks now for an inexpensive option, they do have some solid competition to contend with now from the Godox V850 and Cactus V6 / RF60, which offer much broader systems.

    Very interesting to bad they are not able to keep the systems compatible. And have say this unit control both the 622C’s and the YN-560III What would be nice if they would release a receiver that could control the power of other flashes besides the YN-560III currently it is limited to one flash unlike the other systems. That is where I think they may have issues.

      Hi George,

      No that won’t be possible with the one transmitter.

      You could connect RF-603 II receivers on the V850 foot (or sync port) to fire them via the YN560-TX, and then use the FT-16 transmitter in hand to control the power levels of the V850.

      Hopefully Godox have an even nicer transmitter coming for the V850 etc though 🙂

    Can I somehow use this to make manual remote settings on other flashes? A Nikon SB-700? A Yongnuo 560II?

    I’m not sure why I would buy into this “system” of theirs over their TTL based system(YN-622N-TX)…I’m guessing this one just has less features with a lower cost of entry?

    Thanks though…love what these companies are doing now and this site is great! If we still had to rely on Nikon to innovate we’d still be in the dark ages.

      Hi JR,

      Thanks for that. But no you won’t be able to make remote manual power settings with any other flashes at this point.

      Yes the point of these are that they are very economical if remote manual power control with speedlites is mainly all you’re after.

      The radio receivers are built in to the flashes, so you’re paying a little more for a complete flash and receiver, than the Cactus V6 receivers alone. And at least half the price of a YN TTL flash and YN-622 receiver.

      It is unfortunate YongNuo have gotten into this situation of having a number of very popular though incompatible systems. I don’t know if they will ever tie them together, so that can make it challenging to choose which way to go.

        Okay, thanks. That’s a bit disappointing and looks like I’ll have to upgrade my entire flash/trigger kit again so might as well go TTL.

        I have a number of Yongnuo 560IIs that I was using with the simple 603 triggers. Worked great but no remote changes either manual or TTL.

        I think I might just spend $500 or so and go with their TTL setup which also supports some type of HSS as far as I know.

          Yes the YN-622C / YN-622N provide HSS, provided you use compatible flashes which support HSS themselves.

          From YongNuo that is mainly the YN-568EX / II and the YN-500EX for (only for Canon at this stage).

          For those using Canon, the YN-600EX-RT is also the flash many people are waiting for. (Compatible with the available YN-E3-RT transmitter, and Canon’s RT flash and transmitter).

          I have 2 YN-560 II’s 1 YN-560 III a YN-565 EX and 2 canon580 EX II’s I use a combination of Piggy backed 603 II and 622-C to trigger them. any way I can do this with the 560-TX? Thought I could piggy back the 560 on the 622-c trigger and use it to control the outputs on my 560 II’S and the 560 II.
          On another note, it sure would help if they would get a better translator to do their manuals, I meam like how long have they ,been selling to English speaking markets? If Canon & Nikon can do it why can’t they?

            Hi Matt,

            You should be able to piggy back the YN560-TX on top of the YN-622C.

            Nothing will control the output of your YN-560 II though, they need to be MK III models.

            If you look here, you can even control your 580EX II’s and YN-560 III all through the YN560-TX (for remote manual power control and zoom only).

            Yes many of the manuals are often terrible. These days English speaking markets may not even be the main market though. Canon and Nikon charge you well to cover the cost of nice documentation etc.

    Too late for me. Went to Godox/Cheetah. I switched because I needed control from the camera, but I have since ordered the 360, and with the release of the RS600 there will now be a complete portable/studio lighting setup with varying degrees of power that I can control from the camera remote. Very exciting times for photographers.

      Hi chris,

      The Cactus V6 will control a whole range of TTL speedlites as well as their remote manual RF60 flash unit. And the Godox system has a much broader range of compatible lights again, with the Witstro bare bulb flahses, the Xenergizer, and quite a number of mains powered monolights.

      The YN560-TX can only control the YN-560 III speedlite at this stage. YongNuo may add that down the track. The problem is though they have a number of different systems all hoping for more updates and offerings. So they are really spreading the resources thinner over a number of systems.

      Yes the remote function is already built in to the current YN-560 III flashes. It has since the first units went on sale.

      If you look at the YN-560 III review here you can see there is a mystery mode under the Mode button. And also a Group mode on the flash which currently has no function. Thanks.

    I have bought a YN 560 III & RF 603n for my Nikon D600, I just can’t seem to figure out how to use my Minolta Flashmeter III to measure my light output. Is it even possible to fire my flash with my flash meter or do I need this YN560-TX?

      Hi Ren,

      With the original RF-603 you can not test fire them when off the camera hotshoe.

      With the RF-603 II YongNuo rectified that so you can now hold one in your hand to test fire the lights, and let the meter simply measure the light once the flash goes off.

      You still can not connect a meter to the RF-603 II transmitter via sync cord, as the PC sync port in the F-603 II is not an input. It may work using a hotshoe on the foot of the RF-603 II and connecting the sync cord to that. Though its likely just as easy to use the test fire button to simply fire the lights.

      The YN560-TX would appear to have a PC sync port under the rubber cover on the side, though I don’t know the function as yet.

        Thanks for the reply. Yes, I got the reading by pressing the flash meter longer before I press the test button on the RF 603n connected to my camera. I wish they soon come up with a radio transmitter that can be attached to a flash meter via a pc cord or hopefully this YN560TX is able to do it. Unfortunately, meters are not as popular like in the film days where it is almost a must to have one unlike now where one can instantly view what was digitally captured today.

    The 560-TX looks great. Maybe there is a reason for them taking so long to come out with it. Having a nice big display made it easy to scope out the competition first. Advantage over V6: more groups and the V6 cannot be upgraded with firmware or you lose dedicated buttons. Advantage over Godox? Remote zoom got added – the FT-16 does not have enough buttons. If Yongnuo looked at all, turning on and off groups (many complaints on Godox) might be simple – not as fast as the V6 with buttons though.

    All three systems are “closed” – not as broad as they appear. They all promote their own flashes/strobes. Cactus V6 does not make sense with a cheap competition TTL flash – add in the cost of a complete full featured V6 as receiver and added bulk, the RF60 looks pretty darn sweet in comparison. Maybe if you got a lot of different old TTL flashes, but again you will pay for a tranceiver. Godox only lets you control Godox. Yongnuo only controls YN-560III, but same as RF60 with built in receiver.

    Yongnuo still comes out first in one important little feature: compatibility with dumb RF 603 triggers. If the group feature works with them as well, it might be all you need. Remote power/zoom on your YN-560III (and maybe future models), and even cheaper small manual flashes on the groups that don’t require remote power. You won’t be completely locked in, only on the remote power part.

    They all have to get their research money back somehow.

      Hi Uwe,

      The group feature won’t work with the current RF-602 / RF-603 / RF-603 II, as those triggers do not support groups. But this is one thing YongNuo could easily add to the next round of RF-603 style triggers.

      Being compatible with the RF-602 / 3 is a blessing and a curse. Its trying to provide this backward capability for current 602/3 owners that has produced this very awkward situation of having numerous incompatible systems.

      Just wait until these go on sale, and all the unsuspecting people not previously familiar with the YongNuo line up suddenly start to realise the situation of what they have bought into.

      Just a few years ago YongNuo were very hit and miss with the design of the products themselves, let alone planning an integrated system. But it would have been far better to bite the bullet and faze out the RF-602/3 system and make the RF-604 and YN560 III / YN560-TX all compatible with the YN-622 system instead.

      Now they are going deeper into incompatible systems. Which is inconvenient, but also spreads the resources a lot thinner.

        Ah thanks for the info. I was planning on pushing the GO button on a FT-16s/TT-850 tomorrow, and the YN-560-TX showed up. Just to put a road block in the way.

        Turns out there won’t be a system that can satisfy everything. So instead of shopping for the remote power controller, I will shop for the flash. And that is pretty simple: on a budget the TT850 is almost cheaper than a YN-560III plus 2 sets of batteries. For remote power control the Godox will work – not too long ago it meant walking and nobody was complaining. Receiver falling off? Nothing a piece of duct tape couldn’t fix.

      Cactus also is compatible with dumb Cactus v5 triggers, and LV5 Laser triggers. So I don’t see how that it is compatible with YN’s doubt triggers it puts it ahead. Cactus V6 is also not as closed as the others it supports power adjustments on 3 different brand compatible flash systems. Canon, Nikon, Pentax.. and supports more third party flashes than any other flash trigger with remote power control. Also you are able to keep absolute power levels even across flash models, and very quick adjustments. The design of the v6 was to have quick adjustment through the interface. As quick as possible. It is very quick. With the group buttons and the dial, and the quick swap between full 1/1 power stops to your set 1/10 1/5 or 1/3 settings. Sure if you have no other flashes and need a new system the YN560-TX and the YN560III’s look to be an economical choice. However if you want a little more functionality, and the compatibility with your existing flashes then cactus looks like a good choice. If you want lithium ion flashes, or control of more quatra type cheeta units then godox is your choice. Although I wish they update thier triggers to be 2.4ghz. I

        Well as it turns out, with both V6 and YN-560-TX you still loose group function. If they can’t be power controlled, at least turning them on and off in groups should be possible. Probably Cactus comes out with a simple receiver that can be assigned a group before Yongnuo does. Or neither will.

        As far as new Godox trigger system going to 2.4 ghz – do you really want that? Everybody else uses 2.4 including most routers. If anything they should try for a 5 ghz system – not a whole lot of traffic going on there, except dual band routers. They must have something in mind when they did not physically include the receiver in the V850, but made it removeable. You can always upgrade firmware for new trigger system, but not hardware if going to a different frequency range.

          5ghz will eat to much power I believe. Issue is though when ever a trigger goes through a frequency change they have to throw out backwards compatibility. That’s why pocket wizard has stayed at 433hz for all theses years.

            Its highly likely they will change to 2.4GHz.

            The current triggers would not be compatible. But the lights are the expensive part, and they would all be compatible again with the new system.

            Imagine if the radio was built in and not clip on though, any change would be lot bigger issue.

    Great news, long time overdue though. My wedding setup has YN-560III flashes triggered with Phottix Strato II system which has a clear advantage of instant turning on or off of 4 groups. This feature is indespensable for me, as I can turn on or off flashes as I move around the dancing floor. One problem with Phottix Strato II Transmitter – its metal foot not thick enough for Canon 5D Mk3 hotshoe, and the Canon 600RT mounted on top of it wiggles too much. :=(
    This new transmitter, just like the Godox FT-16 transmitter, does not allow mounting a flash on top of it.
    After this long introduction – will it be possible to somehow add this new YN560-TX to my system for remote power adjustment, while firing with the Phottix Strato II trigger system?

      Hi Michael,

      Hopefully YongNuo will have had the forethought to make the YN560-TX function completely off of the camera hotshoe. So you may be able to hold it in hand (like the we often do with the Godox FT-16 transmitter) just to change the flash power levels. The flash is then fired via other means like the Strato’s.

      We’ll have to wait and see though to be sure.

      Hopefully the YN560-TX should allow you to turn groups on and off though as well.

      Yes the Strato II have an excellent fit on the Canon flash foot, though the Strato foot could be neater in the cameras hotshoe. But pass through hotshoes are always going to struggle for more than occasional use (unless someone really engineers a solid clamping foot / shoe etc), so connecting the transmitter via the cameras PC sync port is the solid (though less neat and convenient) option.

      This is another area there may be some hope that YongNuo may provide an RT compatible manual receiver at some stage, so you could have the Canon 600EX-RT mounted directly on the camera hothshoe, with no other transmitters needed. Thanks.

        Can you please recommend the hardware needed to mount/attach the Phottix Strato II transmitter to the camera other than in hotshoe? Is there some kind of a bracket or an adapter available?

          This is the problem. If you don’t already use an on camera flash bracket, it can be hard to find a convenient place to mount the transmitter without adding a reasonably large bracket anyway.

          People often just try to strap the transmitter to the side of the flash mounted on the camera. Though that can be pretty messy with larger transmitter units. And if you want to be using the group buttons on the Strato II, you would really want it mounted securely somewhere.

          So the main option is basically one of these flash brackets with a handle, and just mount the transmitter on the that instead of a flash etc.

          You can get some pretty cheap brackets, and very nice ones as well.

          If you happen to use an L Bracket on the camera though, you can get a clamp with hotshoe, and mount the transmitter on the side of the camera.

          The transmitter can still get in the way of your left hand there though when using the camera in portrait. Where those bigger handle flash brackets raise the mount up out of the way, and the handle gives you something to rest the camera on your hand when held in portrait.

          If you want to avoid a bracket its not easy to find a good mounting method. Ideally a hotshoe built in to the side of the flash would be the best option.

            I am using the Arca Swiss L-bracket, so the clamp with hotshoe might just be the adapter I need.

              No worries, that’s handy that your using the L bracket then. The clamp with hotshoe will work, but as mentioned it really gets in they way when holding the camera in portrait.

              If doing it again I would personally get a wider 50mm or so clamp like this, and screw an L bracket, or even just a straight bracket to that, to then raise the mounting point of the hotshoe and Strato II above the camera. So you still have a nice flat area to rest the camera on your hand in portrait position (the trigger is now off to the side of your hand).

              You could probably use some off the shelf clamp and rail track like this, (though turning the clamp horizontal with the track). That’s getting a little bit bulky, but at least you could still use the rail to connect to a tripod in portrait as well. (I’m sure there are cheaper version on ebay etc somewhere to try).

      strobist technique: It refers to the use of one or more remote flash mode. That is not attached to the flash shoe of the camera and therefore triggered remotely.

        I shoot events and need to have flashes both off- and on-camera. Flash brackets with sync cords are cumbersome, so I’d really prefer to have a trigger with a pass-through hotshoe. Phottix Stratos are great for this, but they don’t give me remote control of off-camera flash output. And, I shoot Panasonic Micro Four Thirds, so Canon-compatible TTL systems don’t help me.

        C’mon Godox! Give us a trigger with a universal pass-through. You’ll corner the entire m43 market.

    I went with the Godox/Neewer 850’s because there was no news on this transmitter.

    On that note, have you heard anything about the Neewer batteries in their version of the Godox V850 (the TT850). I’m not getting any reasonable life out of them. I’m not the only one too. A friend that got a set is having issues too. I’ve Godox spares on the way and a v860, so I can compare that way, but curious as to whether this is isolated.

      There have been a couple of reports of the Godox version, and a couple of the Cheetah being duds as well.

      They are all the same Godox batteries from the same production line though.

      So far at least its a very small number compared to how many flashes have gone out.

      My Neewer batteries are doing fine. FYI, new li-ion batteries need to be put through a few full charge/discharge cycles before they reach full working capacity. Fully charge them, then fully discharge them. After doing this a few times, you should then switch to partial charge/discharge operation, as li-ions don’t like being kept fully charged or fully discharged for long periods of time.

    Will there be a specific Nikon version with 4 pins in the hot shoe, or will this be the only option with the 5 Canon pins?

      I suspect there will be Canon and Nikon versions like the RF-603 II etc.

      That would likely only be for flash wake up feature like the RF-603 II etc as well. They should operate on any camera with a standard hotshoe otherwise.

    Do we know what will be involved at the Flash end. ie, what will we need to do to set the group etc on the flash. At the moment the group button does nothing, will it suddenly activate when the TX is turned on and the 560III group menu allow you to select different groups?
    Would be nice to be able to see which group without having to have the TX switched on otherwise I can see us sticking group labels all over our 560III’s

      I’m intrigued to see how this is going to operate myself.

      Somehow the flash is going to have to recognise a link with the transmitter and then activate the functions as you say.

      I would expect the group setting would remain in the flash memory at least.

      Use YN560-TX to ACTIVATE YN560-III first time and the function will be unlocked. It will be valid unless you turn if off again in C.FN.

      There will be no remote capabilities with the original YN-560 or the YN-560 III.

      A separate receiver can not add this function either, as there is no communication port into the flash (or TTL contacts on the flash foot). Thanks.

    Just had a thought when looking at the photos with the TX sitting on a stand.
    We may be able to use the TX in a hand held mode and control all our flash groups as well as do lighting tests with a light meter etc. eg hold the light meter near your model and fire off the flashes with the hand held TX, make changes and test fire them with the TX until your happy with the exposure setting appearing on the light meter. Then go back to the camera with a 602/3 on top and shoot away.
    Hopefully, we might then be able to have a 602/3 sitting on our camera and use it to trigger the 560II’s and they will retain the settings that were set by the YN56–TX.
    If they TX is useable off camera then this is logical because when you run around and manually set your 560III’s they retain the settings when triggered by a 602/3.

    I use 603 II to trigger YN560III’s. I was hoping I could still use it to trigger the YN560III’s and use the YN560TX to remotely control the power of each.

    Reason for this is because the 603ii has a hot shoe on top with pass through for my cybersync trigger (when I want to use the Yongnuo flashes along with my Paul C Buff Einsteins).

    I don’t see any hot shoe on the YN 560 TX for pass through..

    Please tell me I can still use my 603 II to trigger these flashes and use the YN560TX just for remotely controlling thier power.

      It appears that from the post above and the reply from Lianggc this scenario may be possible.
      You can use a 603ii on top of your camera with a fill flash on top of that using the pass through hot shoe.
      Use the 560TX as a remote control for all your off camera flashes and trigger them with the 603ii on top of the camera.
      Will be a nice setup with a light meter as you can walk around and test your lighting, adjust as needed and test again to get your balance just right and then go back and shoot away knowing your have your lights and exposure just right.
      Lets hope this is the case

      Yes as Greig says, it certainly looks like Lianggc is indicating that is the case.

      Once you set a power level on the flash it should stay there, until you make changes again. So you can actually fire the flash via other means than the YN560-TX.

    First off, it looks as if this new 560TX has a PC sync (what else would be under the flap on the left side of the body?). This gives it a nice edge over the FT-16 which requires you to get an adapter, mod the unit or use a second set of triggers to be useful outside of the cameras hot shoe.

    I’m thinking that the most flexible system will still be to use the Phottix Stratos II with the instant group on/off controls in addition to either the Godox/Neewer or Yongnuo. This would also allow for TTL passthrough to an on-camera flash. Getting TTL on camera in conjunction with the godox/neewer or yongnuo is a much more cumbersome setup.

    Second – and I’m not even sure if this is possible at all with current flash tech – I’d love to see the 560TX transmit power levels settings along with firing so that two photographers could use the same setup for different looks. The FT-16 doesn’t allow this as the power levels are set in separate transmissions. I realize that logistically, it wouldn’t work with the flash settings having different zoom settings because that would cause a significant delay to respond to two transmitters sending different commands – but power levels would be nice.

      Hi Bryan,

      I would assume there is a PC sync port under the rubber tab. I don’t know if there is a USB port.

      But we got caught out with the RF-603 II, because the PC sync port is output only. Hopefully YongNuo have made that Input on the YN560-TX, but I don’t know.

      TTL Flash On Camera – A lot of people complain about, and eventually give up on pass through hotshoes after a while. If its just for occasional use, or if you’re fairly gentle with tilt and swiveling the flash on top, you may be fine with it.

      I’m pretty sure Godox will be working on flashes with the transmitter built in to resolve this problem. I’d be surprised if YongNuo do not have the same eventual plans. But that is more likely with the TTL flashes than the YN-560 III. And Phottix have already done this with the Mitros+.

      The way I have been experimenting recently is to use the Mitros+ on camera. Then place a Godox FT-16 on a Odin or Strato II receiver, to then fire all the Godox light as well. A separate FT-16 in pocket to control the Godox lights. So this way there is only one neat TTL flash on the camera. You could likely do the same thing with the Mitros+ and YN-560 III / YN560-TX.

      The other option would be a TTL flash directly on the camera, and some other triggers connected to the camera’s PC sync port. The YN560-TX then placed in pocket for setting remote power levels.

      The Phottix Odin and or Mitros+ actually do what you want to do there. They use the slave flashes in TTL mode even for remote manual power levels. And they send the power level update as you fire, so you can fire the same remote flash at different power levels (or TTL levels) from different transmitters. Dave Cheung talks about that here.

      The YN-560TX will not be able to do this though. And there are arguments for and against it as well. Setting the power level separately from the fire signal means you can have much greater range for example, even if that means using separate PocketWizard’s etc just to fire the flashes.

      The YN-560 III & YN-560TX was only meant to be a simple inexpensive remote manual system though. Maybe YongNuo should make a transmitter with TTL pass through hotshoe, or better still a TTL flash with YN560-TX built in. But this may be left to the YN-622 TTL system (and RT system). They certainly need it as well.

      As I keep mentioning, it would have been much more convenient to link the YN-560 III to the YN-622 system, and not the RF-602/603 etc. At least to start with.

    Since this device can control the output of YN560 III, I do not see a technical limitation why TTL cannot be included in its software.
    From what I understand, its a matter of triggering a pre-flash, letting the camera calculate the output needed and triggering that in the individual speedlights. Although the YN560 III speedlight does not support TTL on it’s own, if this can control the output individually this should be technically possible.

    Any comments?

      I’m not really sure how to answer that one. Except to say there’s likely zero chance its going to happen 🙂

      Because the YN-622 TTL triggers are far more in line with that situation already. So if anything YongNuo may eventually make a flash with YN-622C receiver built inside.

      lianggc (the YN engineer) could possibly tell you if it could be possible with the YN-560 III (using a new TTL capable transmitter unit designed for this purpose). But I think I’d be pretty safe to say its very unlikely going to happen.

          Business reasons can always be possible, but what I was trying to say is the YN-560 III does not have the same radio module as the current TTL triggers. So it would be far more practical for YN to make another flash with that TTL module inside, rather than trying to convert a flash that wasn’t designed for the purpose.

          So its very unlikely to happen with the YN-560 III.

      When new items are posted on the YongNuo website that generally means they will be available within a month or so, so that sounds about right.

      But the site you linked to even have the YongNuo 50mm F1.4 lens for pre-order for example, and that may not even come this year for all we know. So unsuspecting people are paying double for a product that basically doesn’t exist at the moment.

      They have contacted me before asking me to post links to their store, and I asked them to at least put a notice up saying that they are not affiliated with YongNuo, but they won’t do it. In the mean time people are often thinking they have purchased direct from YongNuo.

    And what about compatibility with the new sony hot shoe? any info about that? I hope the central pin can make the job cause don’t think yn won’t release a specific sony version. I use few pocket wizard plus transivers to fire my yn56III and westcoot apollo as modifiers. A really uncomfortable combination. I will sell my pws plus III if this transmitter will work on my sony a7. What do you think?

      Simone, I believe the new sony is a universal center pin tigger pin fire. So it should work fine because no ttl signal is set.. However if it has flash wake up that won’t work.

    I like to use my 603IIs so I can remotely trigger the camera with the included cord. Will this be possible with the 560-TX? I don’t see the 1/8 pin port for this. This could be a game changer for me to always have to stay by the camera to release the shutter.

      Hi Mike,

      I’m not sure about the YN560-TX yet, but you can still use the RF-603 II on the camera hotshoe as normal to trigger the YN-560 III flashes. You can then hold the YN560-TX in hand to change power levels and turn groups on and off for metering etc. So even if it means still using your RF-603 II as well, you should still have remote shutter release possible.

    Actually, they are now in teh process with competing with themselves. I think they don’t have a CEO or board of directors of any kind, as obviously they have no strategy as can be seen with the wild spread of products without a clear direction. The YN-E3-RT made sense. They should have focussed on the continued use of that particular unit that allows TTL for the brand you bought it for, AND manual for any other brands (as long as you use canon speedlights)

    The long waiting was due to an update in the software of the YN560-TXs as informed by Yongnuo. Otherwise the shipment coold be made earlier.
    Due to different wake-up feautures of Canon and Nikon, Yongnuo decided to update the software as per these camera models, and now there will be Canon and Nikon version too in the market. Both can work for each model without any problem but camera wake-up feature for Nikon may not work on Canon and vice versa.

    In this respect could you please kindly inform me your camera model or which version you wish us to ship to you. “

      The YN560-TX will fire the RF-603II receivers, and YN-560 II flashes attached to them.

      Nothing will provide remote power control with the YN-560 II though. Its best to trade those or YN-560 III if possible if you want all remote manual power control. Thanks.

    I apologize for the lengthy inquiry, and also if my question has already been answered in a prior post I may have overlooked.

    I am aiming to use YN560 III flashlights in remote camera traps used to photograph wildlife in the African rainforest. For this purpose, the actual camera (a Canon DSLR) will be triggered via a cable by a movement sensor, and the flashlights would be triggered remotely from the camera via the Yongnuo RF-603C.

    However, in first tests I conducted I realized that if the YN560 III flashes are kept in life mode (sleep mode disabled), the batteries will only last 12-24 hours. Ideally, the camera traps will be left in the forest 7-10 days until batteries are changed. More frequent visits of the cameras will deter the wildlife we aim to photograph.

    I would therefore prefer to have the YN560 III flashes set in sleep mode to extend battery life. However, I realized that if the flashes are in sleep mode and then enter dormancy (power off), the RF-603C cannot wake them up when the camera is triggered.

    My question therefore is, if there is a way to remotely wake-up the YN560 III flashes once they have powered down in sleep mode. I did not fully understand IF the new Yongnuo YN560-TX Wireless-Flash-Controller can do this, or if it can only control the power output of each flash while those flashes are in life mode (not powered down).
    I would really appreciate if you could help me with this question.

      Hi Philipp,

      I just tried this and no the YN560-TX can not wake the YN-560 III once it has powered down. Update, the RF-603 II can not wake the flash either.

      Even in standby mode though the RF-603 II would miss the first shot before the flash has woken (if that’s going to be an issue).


      Maybe an alternative would be to use a much larger sealed led acid battery to power the flash. As long as the battery is still 6V, you can use an SLA battery with much larger capacity. Just make up some dummy batteries out of wooded dowel to use in the flashes battery compartment.

      That should keep the flash awake for a week easily. You could use a high voltage external battery pack to help power the flash capacitor (and speed up recycle) as well then.

      I’m not sure if you’re the person that emailed the other day, though this could actually be a clever way to get around external power sourced needed for external radio receivers. You would need to test the transmitter though. And the RF-603 II would likely be the best transmitter as the sync speed is the best with those.

      The YN560-TX could be held in hand to change power levels if needed. It doesn’t need to be attached to the camera (and wouldn’t be much good as the transmitter on the camera as the batteries would go flat).

      If the flash is always active though, at least it would always be ready to fire instantly when needed. Thanks.

Do you happen to have any experience as to how long the flash can operate on such a SLA battery pack in active mode (no stand-by, not powered down)?       Hi Philipp,

      The YN-560 III have no option to select “only the external battery” to recharge the flash capacitor (like Canon and Nikon flashes provide), so its always going to depend to some degree how many times the flash fires as well.

      But if you use an external high voltage battery pack as well, at least that is providing a large portion of the charge to the capacitor instead of wasting too much of your battery which is running the interface as well.

      Sealed Lead Acid batteries are a bit like your car battery, and they will often run flat in a few weeks without anything connected. 7-10 days should be fine though with a healthy battery, provided you do have enough capacity.

      Disregarding the flashing, I would be surprised if a small 6V motorbike battery wouldn’t keep the flash awake for a week easily. Its likely just going to depend on the number of shots needed (or how big, or how many batteries you would need).

      SLA batteries don’t like to be left without charge though either. So you would be best to buy a little battery conditioner that constantly keeps them charged while being stored.

    So I received my YN560-TX today. I hold it in my hand and try to adjust the power on my YN560-III remotely but no success. When I adjust the power on the 560-TX, the blue light under the pilot light flashes but the power on the flash stays unchanged. Am I missing anything?

    Do you know if you can use 2 of the TX’s at the same time? For example if I was shooting a wedding and 2 bodies with each having this TX. Would they both fire the strobes?

      Hi George,

      I don’t have 2 TX’s here yet to try this first hand. Though with the way one works its pretty clear that you could use 2 to fire the same strobes.

      Where it gets a little tricky though is with the power settings. If you start changing power settings on the TX they will automatically go straight to the flash.

      Its very unlikely though that changing the settings on one TX would update the other TX to read the same settings automatically. But unless you pressed the test fire button on the second TX, the flashes would still fire at the power level set on the first TX (and still showing on the back of the flash). Until you start adjusting the power levels on the second TX again (or press the test fire button).

      So depending on what you are doing, it may be better to just use one YN560-TX (possibly even in hand) and an RF-603 II as the transmitter on one or both cameras just to fire the flashes.

      Then again you might like to have different setting for each camera, or have 2 shooters. One way or another you would need to manage different power levels between the flashes and multiple transmitters.

      This is in comparison to something like the Phottix Odin TTL triggers, which send the power levels to the flashes every time they fire them. So a number of TX’s with different settings will still fire the flashes as each TX asks every time. Though even the Odin can not updates a second transmitter as another one is adjusted.

      Thanks, do you have the YN560-TX set to RF-602 mode? (the mode shows up on the screen as you turn the transmitter on).

      You would need the YN-560 III set to RF-602 mode as well for all to communicate together.

        So, got the 560-TX to talk to the 602RX but it’s not the same mode as for the 560III speed light is it. When I switch it for the 602 it no longer speaks to the 560. I’m new to speed light use so I could have easily overlooked another piece of the puzzle. Thanks.

    So far i have yn-560 IV and yn-560 TX. They work great. Now, i also have several RF-603C (canon). When i try one RF-603c with one of my canon flash set to manual, yn-560tx won’t trigger them. They all set to channel 1. Based on the description, YN-560 TX compatible with RF-603. Am i missing something?

      You can even just use the YN-622C just for the AF assist light, and the YN560-TX as the transmitter.

    I’m afraid I’m having some difficulty getting my 7D to recognize the YN560-TX. Does anyone know of any instructions for setting this up in the menu? When I go to MENU >> FLASH CONTROL – All I’m getting at the moment is an error message saying “This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash’s power is turned off”

    Has anyone else experienced this – and happen to know what the remedy is??? Thanking you.

      After an hour of playing around it now seems to be working. I have no idea what’s different – but it’s working now. I still have the “This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash’s power is turned off” message – but it seems that it works anyway. I think I got hung up on that message, when maybe it makes no difference???

    My 560TX with 2 x 560 iii set up is working great but the TX is not triggering my RF 603ii in mode with a Neewer 520 on top of it. it worked fine 603ii to 603ii – the channels are the same I must be doing something stupid wrong – it would not be the first time! Any thoughts?
