The very long awaited YongNuo YN600EX-RT flashes are now available from around $105 on Ebay, and from the YongNuo Store on Ebay.

Like the YongNuo YN-E3-RT transmitter, the YN600EX-RT flashes are directly compatible with the 2.4GHz RT radio system built into Canon’s own 600EX-RT flash, and ST-E3-RT transmitter units.

    i have a pair of YN600EX-RTs and i was putting them through their paces and testing all of the functionality. Everything works except wireless optical slave Sc, S1 or S2.

    i am trying to use the built-in camera flash with the them and and they won’t fire. The yongnuo’s are set to Sc, Ch 1 and Group A. The master is the built-in in flash of a canon 70D. The 70D is set to wireless flash enabled, external flash enabled, ETTL, Ch 1, A:B mode and ratio 1:1. I’ve also tried the yongnuo’s in S1/S2 and the 70D in manual instead of ETTL as well.

    Are my flashes defective or do they not support the canon 70D built in flash

    The same camera settings triggers a phottix mitros+ in optical rx mode.

      Nevermind. It was a fluke. For some reason when i tried SC last night, the two leds that indicate optical wireless slave is on weren’t flashing. When i tried today, they were flashing and now the yongnuos work with the built-in flash of the 70D.

    I just received my first YN-600EX-RT. When using eneloop batteries I get a strange color cast. When using regular non-rechargeable batteries no such issue. Anyone else experience problems using eneloop batteries? I using a Canon 5DIII.

      yes, becasue they dont have the same voltage compared to regular batteries 1.2V vs 1.5Volts.- they also drain faster and heats up faster – I used to have 4 dozen rechargables – now, I just buy 2-3 packs of 36 pack batteries, namely, off brands from Home Depot, they got 1.6volts.

      you guys complaining about a colour cast… rest assured it is NOT the batteries… your flash does NOT cast any colour aside from the WB range between 5000-5500 depending on the temp of the xeon globe, the burn in on your fresnel and plastic protection screen in front of your Fressi (they do burn after time) in addition to the condition of your reflector (more burn).

      The charge of battery bares NO CONSIDERATION to colour considering the FACT that this flash, and every flash like it, has a build in charge capacitor which builds charge from those AA batteries, whether they be 1.2 or 1.6v. The xeon flash/light receives its power from the charge capacitor, so if your globe is NOT receiving appropriate voltage to fire the correct exposure or you’re getting a colour cast due to insufficient charge within the capacitor, then theres something wrong with the capacitor, not the batteries…

      Your batteries voltage consistency ONLY determine the rate in which that capacitor is recharged and of course most other elements required, such as wireless connection, slave sensor activation, red AF IR spread etc etc

      You mean third flash off camera? If so, I don’t think two masters can sync to a slave, so one of the cameras could fire the third.

      The optical wireless sensor will trigger to any flash fluctuation within a certain ms (millisecond) range in addition to exposure level. So yes, two bodies, both holding master slaves, and a remote slave flash set off cam will trigger the off cam flash, BUT the SETTINGS of the off cam flash (ie ETTL vs MANUAL) will only be set based on what you have configured it to on the unit itself. I dont beleive you can remotely send EC Exposure Compensation or manually tweak power settings 1/8 1/64 etc through the optical system. I could be wrong, but i havent used the optical system since i got my old 622’s which are absolutely wonderful but now obsolete… If however youre using a radio trigger like the RC622 or the inbuilt RT of the newer 600ex RTII, its a different story, as every setting is sent to the slave unit via RT as though its tethered with a cord.

      The easiest way to consider your question, is to see your slave as a TV.. and your two on cam master flashes as 2 seperate TV remotes for that same tv

      Don’t think you can. The older one uses the older sync method, the 600ex-rt uses the new RF linking. You can link to the other RT devices.

    Yes, I mean each 5DIII has Canon 600ex-rt, and several YN600ex-rt off camera as slave.

    I only to fire master flash on camera one at a time. Based on your suggestion, sound likes it works fine if I don’t shot both master at the same time.

    One question: If i change power level to the slave from one master, then later on i want to change power level of the slave from another master, does it work?

    Yongnuo released Firmware 1.8.6 From the change log:

    Fixed:When using the YN600EX-RT and Canon 430EX III together,wireless shooting does not work.

    Fixed:Sometimes turning off the YN600EX-RT,the speedlite can not save the setting.

    I have installed this — works fine with Canon 7D MkII — still not with Fuji X100T (see other threads on this)

    someone have user experience about YN 600 ex rt and Canon 5d MK2?
    They are fully compliants or they have limitations: i.e. ETTL, HSS, SCS, 5 GR, Master and Slave functions on RT or Optic pulse, etc?
    I am much confused about pro/cons of this flashes: YN 600EX RT, SHANNY SN 600 C-RT or RF? EXRT or EXRF, Godox TT 685 (or V860?).
    I read each these three flashes have some problems (i.e.
    – hot shoe problem for YN 600 and Godox 865,
    – no optic master mode for YN600 (only radio)
    – unlike godox tt685 that seems actually more complete under this aspect master/slave with both radio and optic functions but seems to have some TTL overexposure problems specially in HSS.
    – Shanny seems to have not hot shoe problem, but no firmware updates availables (though USB is present) and no clear strategy for RT or RF ways: it seems they have stopped the RT develop vs RF).

    I think the best mode for the choice is other’s user experience, because any advanced feature is useless if it does not work on own canon 5d2.
    I need firstly a hot shoe flash with ETTL, HSS, SCS and then a second flash with same functions, whith mix use both ETTL and Manual modes mantaining HSS, SCS, etc.

    I must change my actually old Starblitz 300 DFC (canon Eos) but the camera menu read it as TTL but it works only in manual mode….

    Someone can help me? Thanks!

      Hi sal,

      The YN600EX-RT can not provide GR Group mode with the 5D MKII unfortunately. So you can not have 5 groups, or mix TTL and Manual groups. That is the same situation with the genuine Canon RT speedlites though as well.

      The YNE3-RT transmitter can provide GR Group mode though with the 5DII and pre 2012 cameras.

      The Godox TT685 and Shanny RF flashes currently have basically the same limitation, and using any camera year model.

      The Phottix Mitros+ do allow mixed TTL and Manual Groups though with cameras before and after 2012.

      My personal preference if only needing a few speedlites, and a TTL flash on camera, would be to use a genuine Canon RT flash on camera (600EX-RT or 430EXIII-RT), and just use the YN600EX-RT as remote slave flashes.

      Though you have to live without the GR Group mode then (that’s why I went with a Canon 6D myself instead of the older 5D II).

      Most people using pre-2012 cameras just live with the limitations, as people used the optic wireless system with the same limitation for a long time before that.

      Maybe the Mitros+ will suit you though.

        thanks for the quick reply and for the advice, I did not know Phottix Mitros+ and I read the flashhavoc review there. As you correctly said,this is a great flash, well built, that best meets my expectations, but unfortunately in version + is more about 3 times over my budget, and in the standard version more than 2 times.

        So I have to get off to a compromise; I try to summarize my needs and my criteria on which the purchase option in order of priority, noting that I have not already other canon flash to drive:
        1. within a tight budget for non-professional use
        2. solid mounting on hot shoe, preferably with quick locking like Canon (except TT685)
        3. compliant with 5d2, but open to future upgrades vs. 6d or 5D3
        4. to use as “first” master on camera, which has especially accuracy on TTL exposure indoor/outdoor with HSS and SCS
        5. to be able to add them (later) a slave radio, initially without an external trigger
        6. The GR group and ttl and manual mix, would put it into the background at the moment, waiting for camera upgrades.

        For this reason I had identified a short list of 3 flashes: Godox TT685, YN600 EXRT, SN 600 EX RF (I think better than RT?) , or low budget SN 600 C -RF (or RT).
        Now for what I read here, were it not for hot shoe problem and af assist issue, I could choose Godox TT 685 or YN 600 EX RT (but not optic master and with same hot shoe issue, perhaps but less important than Godox TT685?)
        For removing the play on YN 600EX RT, have you considered as reliably the solutions showed on you tube through a 30 mm rubber oring? Have you seen this video at link ?
        It seems the genial solution but we can see some stress on the lever locking? If this could be a positive solution, a remaining lack of YN 600EXRT may be is no optic master for more flexibility of use (unlike TT685).

          Hi Sal,

          I’m not sure if the Godox TT685C foot may have been corrected already or not. In the worst case you could file the front edge down a little yourself.

          I don’t think there is any great issue with the YN600EX-RT foot. The first small batch were VERY loose, though after that they were corrected and I don’t think there is excessive movement. The rubber o-ring is probably a nice idea though as well.

          The real issue is more that the YongNuo and Godox flashes do not have a locking button on the flash head like the Canon flashes, so there is no pressure on the flash foot as you twist the flash head. The Canon flashes are just more refined there. Though if you’re not using the flash for continual professional use its generally not really a big issue.

          You sound like you want to be in this for a while and progress with new gear eventually, so another big consideration I would be thinking about is if you are going to want to include larger lights like the Godox AD360 / II as well? If that’s the case then the Godox master flash (TT685C or coming V860II-C) would really be worth considering.

          We have been trying to get Godox to add the GR Group mode to the TT685C and V860II-C, though I don’t know yet if that is going to happen (and would likely be for 2012 onwards cameras anyway).

          If you just want speedlites then on your budget the YN600EX-RT are a nice option. The best thing there is you can add a genuine Canon flash as the master later if you get more serious about event style photography.

          Personally I have become wary of Shanny and their products at the moment. They have had a lot of failures, and since Amanda left they do not know how to help customers directly. They have just signed Omega Brandness as the USA distributor though, so it may be safer now for US customers at least.

          So personally I would go with Godox if you’re interested in a larger system with bigger lights as well. YongNuo YN600EX-RT if you’re happy with speedlites (and possibly get a Canon master flash later).

          I would also have more faith the Godox speedlites will still be going in a few years. That’s not to say large percentage of the YongNuo flashes hold up well over time as well.

      Hi Atanu,

      Not really as anything more than a basic manual flash when mounted on a Nikon cameras hotshoe. The 600EX-RT are Canon ETTL compatible flashes, not Nikon iTTL.

      If you just want an on-camera TTL flash for Nikon the main option from YongNuo is the (somewhat outdated) YN-568EX.

      If you’re looking at on and off camera flash with radio, then the Nikon version of the YN685 would be the way to go once they are available. YongNuo have mentioned they will be coming soon (likely in the 2nd 1/4 of 2016). They have the YN622N radio receivers built inside.

      I’m not sure about that issue sorry. Probably best to contact YongNuo.

      They do provide 12 months warranty from date of manufacture, though you will need to pay for return shipping to China. (Unless the dealer you purchased from offers a better return / warranty policy).

    A friend just dropped over with a new Yongnuo EX-RT. We tested it against my two Canon 600 EX-RT Speedlights and at full power the Canon’s consistently gave 1/2 stop more output. Is this usual?

      I generally find the YongNuo flashes are all around 2 to 3 tenths behind the Canon 600EX-RT.

      That’s generally the case with many of the 3rd party flashes though.

    I have purchased three Yongnuo 600ex-rt flashes and I find they all have an exposure problem. I am using a Canon 7DII and Canon 100-400mm f5.6 L II lens for this test with one on camera flash. I am using software ver. 1.8.8 in all three flashes.

    I am finding that all three of these flash units used singly on the camera overexpose by about 2 stops if I shoot a gray scale image that is about 30% of the frame or smaller (subject is a gray fence post) . If I shoot a gray scale image that is 100% of the frame then the exposure is correct. I use the camera histogram to access the exposure.

    I compared the histogram to a YN568EXII and to a Canon 430EXII on the exact same target and both get the exposure correct irregardless of the subject size while the 600ex-rt overexposes 2 stops.

    I have the 600ex-rt set to ETTL mode with 0 exposure compensation for this test.

    What is stranger still is if I turn on the radio control (set the flash to master) then the exposure is much closer to being correct which makes not sense. ( I am not using a slave flash.)

    I also note that all three 600ex-rt flashes report the flash distance range as 1.7-4 feet when the zoom lens is set at 130mm or less and does not change when the ISO or aperture is changed in the camera as it should, but when the zoom lens is set to 130mm-400mm the correct range is shown eg. 10-60 feet.

    I am an electronics technician and experienced photographer. There is clearly a problem with these units.

      Hi Ken,

      I’m not much help as my flashes are still on 1.8.3, and I don’t have a 7DII.

      Though I just tried this with the 7D and couldn’t see the overexposure issue. Its not something others have commented on yet either, so I would guess its possibly an issue when using the 7DII, or even possibly in combination with the 100-400L II (if you’re not having the same problem with other lenses as well).

      Also have you tried changing the flash metering mode from Evaluative to Averaging to see if that’s more comparable to the Canon flash?

      Regarding the ISO and Aperture, yes I see its not changing on the flash scale, though the exposures are still ok (in my case).

      Regarding the radio master, its actually normal for the on-camera flash exposure to drop 1 stop in radio master mode. Though I see the Canon 600EX-RT is only doing this once you have an A:B ratio set, even if its still at 1:1 ratio. Where the YN600EX-RT is dropping a stop in radio master mode even with no ratio set (or “ALL”).

      I would suspect your main overexposure issues are likely specific to the Camera and or lens, or longer focal length used though.

        I have tried changing the metering mode to Average with no change. Indeed I suggest that the problem is that the flash is averaging and not using the evaluative. This would explain why full frame gray target is correct but smaller gray targets which would average less light coming back hence more exposure is the cause. I will try other lens and cameras.

    Hi Ken, FWIW I’ve always found the ETTL exposures on Canon Speedlights a bit under, and found a default of +1/3 is a good starting point. This goes right back to the old 540EZ. With your Yongnuo’s, I wouldn’t see this as a bit issue so long as they are consistent with the exposure.

    Hi Ken, I’m trying to duplicate your results .I’m not an exact match for setup. but here is mine: Canon 7D Mkii, YN 600 ex firmware 1.8.6, Canon 70-300 L.

    The first thing I noticed is if I point at the subject 20 feet or so away and zoom the lens with the shutter half pressed, at 70 mm the flash reports the right distance range (18 – 60 feet) at 100 mm it switches to 1.7 – 4 feet and then at 135 mm it switches back to 20 – 60 feet. It has the same behavior when pointed a subject 5 feet away.

    Are you seeing any exposure difference at different focal lengths?

    So I can match your set up, where in the frame is your ” gray scale image that is about 30% of the frame or smaller (subject is a gray fence post)”? middle, left, right? (Does it matter?)

    Last what’s the general brightness of the rest of the scene? I was thinking of testing with an all white background and then an all black background…

    Hi Fritz,

    Thanks for the response.
    I did the test again just now with a gray card. (card is a bit lighter than middle gray but close enough)
    The target was a gray card 15 feet from a gray concrete block wall inside my garage. I used 100mm lens zoom. Lighting was the same on the wall as the target, (basically full shade). If I shoot full frame eg fill the frame with the gray card exposure is correct (hump in the middle). If I then step back so the target is small in the frame eg 25%-30% the width and height then the exposure is 2 stops under. This is consistent across all three Yongnuo 600ex-rt flash units. I got the same result with 200mm lens zoom setting also.
    The Canon 580EXII and 430EXII however produce a correct exposure on both target distances and focal lengths.
    The fact that the flash is reporting the distance info wrong is disconcerting as Canon flash uses the distance info if the target is small in the frame hence little preflash light is reflected from the target but I suspect there is some other issue also.

    I just tried the same test with a 70D rather than the 7DII body. The 70D produced a correct exposure at both target sizes with the Yongnuo flash units, but the distance info on the flash is still incorrect, suggests there is something different in the 7DII.

    Hi Ken, thanks. I hope what I write helps.

    I came as close as I can to matching your set up — my gray card is perhaps a bit dark and instead of concrete block, I have a gray garage door. Similar light on both target and background. and about 15 feet separation from target to background. My frame filled target and stepped back photos were equally exposed as I look at the histograms. I have not downloaded into Lightroom because your difference was pretty obvious to see.

    I am far from an expert on evaluative metering in the 7dMii, but my loose understanding is it gives more emphasis to the zone where focus is. Have you tried switching focus zones to see if it makes a difference?

    Again I’m on the older firmware 1.8.6 and I dont have any experience with the Canon brand flash to compare it too.

    I dont know if you want to try (or if it is possible) to back firmware down on one of the YN600 to 1.8.6 to see if it changes anything.

      I’ve only got 1.8.4, though someone will have later versions on their computer somewhere. The actual firmware are only small files.

      I would suspect the issue is probably more related to the 7DII though as you mention, than an issue with current firmware.

      The first two images compare the 7DII to the 70D with the YN600ex-rt flash at 0 comp.

    I tried going back from firmware 1.8.8 to 1.8.6 but the result was the same. The amount of over exposure on the gray pipe test is about +1.7Ev with both firmware versions.

    I tried using two other lens, a 100mm Canon macro and the 18-135mm zoom with the same over exposure result. The most revealing test today was using the Canon 580 ExII and switching the 7DII menu item, Flash Control, ETTL II metering from Evaluative (default) to Average. The image exposure was now identical to the Yongnuo 600ex-rt. That is they were both over exposed by the same amount. This is expected behavior for a flash averaging the light value when the subject is small in the frame with a distant background. It appears to confirm my thought that the Yongnuo is not using the Evaluative metering but is still Averaging even when set to Evaluative. Probably a software over- site that was missed in testing.

    Ken, I think you have your answer — and also, let me share an observation — but maybe it doesn’t matter. In your 70 D example, you are in ONE SHOT, and in the 7D you are in AI Servo. In an old thread about the original 7D


    There is discussion about evaluative metering in AI servo and how focus is determined. Could this also play a role? You have more flash experience than I do, my test shot (at 166 focal length) is here.

    Hi guys,

    Probably I had used my YN600 too extensively in wedding so now my speedlight is dead. When I switch it on, it shows the overheating symbol and it does not go away for months. I got it working for few minutes after cooling it down placing it in refrigerator 🙂 and use this lucky moment to update firmware first to 1.8.6, then to 1.8.8 version. No success, same overheating symbol. I saw in changelog that in older version 1.8.1 there were some fix to that but it seams to me that it is not fixed. Took to local repair, the man there said that all the electronics is ok but controller is sending this f.. overheating symbol. Does anybody have any ideas? Or You had the similar issue?

    to Gundars & others firends have this YN600exrt problem : i have the same problem, i have May 2015 batch, firmware v1.8.5 ( currently after a job use , it show up heating icon!!! , can NOT use or flashes, just freeze like that. try update firmware to v1.90, no luck, the problem still there….

    i brought it on online @Taobao, email them : hkyongnuo, no reply..

    anyone can please help here..?????

      Hi shutterboy and others having overheating problem on YN600:
      I got an e-mail reply from Yongnuo guys, they said (as always): put newest firmware, if it does not help most probably your speedlight is dead. As I wrote, my local technicians said that electronics are ok, so.. I guess my 120 USD are gone.
      I did not try firmware 1.9x but I feel it is waste of time…

    Hi, I am after some advice, I have the yongnuo triggers yn-622C (I am using a Canon 6D) and I would like to trigger them from an on camera flash without having to put another trigger under the on camera flash. So is there a flash unit that is compatible and also has an external power port and will do HSS? It seems that even the Yongnuo 600EX-RT isn’t compatible unless I mount a trigger between it and the camera, is this true? Kind regards, Steve

    I recently bought Yongnuo 600EXRT, and to my surprise first time I try it, all my shoots are dark. The flash itself fires but not captured by sensor. I can use it at speed under 1/30 using 2nd curtain sync and over 1/250 using high speed sync. I still can’t fix it, perhaps someone here have solution? Thanks in advance.

      Sorry I’m not familiar with this issue previously. Would you be using one of the recent camera bodies like the 5D MarkIV? If so you may need to update the firmware in the flash.

    1) It doesn’t properly link to my trigger (YN-E3-RT) and fires a flash. It only shows that it is connected, but doesn’t flash. Channels are set to 1 and ID to 0000. And the link indicator light stays blue, it’s never green even when making it a master on camera to link to a slave.

    2) When attempting to update and following the instructions on YN website, my Terminal on my 2017 Mac states an error “Command Not Found”.

    Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
