YONGNUO YN968EX-RT – Speedlite For Canon Announced

YongNuo have announced a new Canon RT compatible flash in the YN968EX-RT Speedlite.

The YN968EX-RT feature an original case design (rather than a Canon 600EX-RT clone), also with a built in adjustable LED light located under the flash head.

Apart from these features YongNuo have not noted many differences from their original YN600EX-RT model.

Though if the YongNuo specs are correct, the YN968EX’s zoom is stated as a more limited 20-105mm, rather than 20-200mm. Which would also make the flash more powerful, with a Guide Number of 60m at 105mm, rather than at 200mm.

The YN968EX-RT provide both Canon RT radio master and slave modes, directly compatible with other YongNuo YN968EX-RT, YN600EX-RT and YN-E3-RT, as well as Canon’s 600EX-RT and ST-E3-RT etc.

Also providing Canon and Nikon Optical Wireless slave modes, and S1 and S2 basic optic slave modes.

The YN968EX-RT’s built in LED light provides adjustable power levels, as well as a built in diffuser panel, and CTO color correction panel.

The YN968EX-RT is powered by the traditional 4AA batteries, as well as providing an external HV (high voltage) battery pack socket.

A USB port is also provided for firmware updates, as well as a regular PC sync port.

YongNuo have also posted an image of a yet to come YN600EX-RT II Speedlite. Which indicates the YN968EX-RT will not actually be the successor to the original YN600EX-RT.

This also indicates the YN600EX-RT II, and possibly YN968EX-RT, could both possibly have some other unmentioned improvements over the original YN600EX-RT.

What are the LED lights for? Are they bright enough to use as a constant light source for portraits or so?

    • Geir Anders 1 year ago

The LEDs are for fill light when you want to use the main flash head for indirect (=softer) light, by pointing it into the roof or other reflective surfaces. If you use the roof and you are close to your subject, you get a softer overall light – but as the main light comes from above, you may get unflattering shadows in the eyes and below the nose. The small LED will fill in those shadows.

Can you use the LEDs and flash head simultaneously? Other flashes I’ve tried with LEDs didn’t have that capability.

  3. Rien 1 year ago

I think the leds are for filming with the camera. The fill light mentioned by Geir will be obtained using the Bounce Card (see specs). The less will be “outnumbered” by the power of the flash. (sorry for my simple English, I am not a native speaker)

I hope that they will fix the locking hotshoe on both models as YN600EX-RT wiggles when it’s on camera. Other than that, I’m pretty much happy with original YN600EX-RT (note I only use them for OCF as slave flashes during wedding reception)

Question from person unfamiliar with Yongnuo products:
Will the radio trigger of that flash, trigger the yongnuo YN560III flahs?

  6. Namer 1 year ago

No, this flash will not be able to trigger the YN560 III flashes. For that you will need the YN 560 IV

But some people will probably hold off, myself included, untio we see some reviews. Some samples should have been sent out to reviers on youtube.

My friend had a yongnuo flash before but it died for no reason within few months….so I am honestly not sure if I should invest in this brand again or not?

Will any of these lamps be capable of triggering yn685 or 568ex or 622c controlers?
It does says that both 600ex2 and 968ex both have radio master, does that mean they can control 685 and or 568? It is really dificult to figure it out what is compatibile with what in Yongnuo world 🙂

      Hi Luki,

Sorry, no. The Canon RT radio system is generally completely separate from what we generally refer to as the RF radio systems (which were mostly started before Canon had their own radio system).

The YongNuo system does get extremely confusing, though its generally fairly straight forward that the YongNuo RT gear is separate from the rest of their radio systems.

I just got this flash (firmware 1.08) and unlike the YN600EX-RT it does not have a second curtain sync. Would you know if Yongnuo will add this in a firmware update?
The http://yongnuousa.net/products/968ex-rt website list second curtain sync as a feature.

      Hi Kris,

I’m not sure on this. You might be best to try contacting YongNuo and see what they say.

There is V1.09 firmware available in their website, so it may be worth trying that first.

  14. Kris 10 months ago

I updated to v1.09, now I have second curtain sync, but it is only in non master or slave mode. Maybe it was there already with v1.08.
I checked my YN600EX-RT (v1.9.1) and it is the same, second curtain sync is only available in non master/slave mode. I don’t know how it was before I upgraded the 1.9.1. Maybe somebody with older version of firmware can check.
